Advertising hazards👇

The police leadership has strongly condemned the use of its traffic image, as content in a controversial commercial advert, of its juice, popularly known as “JESA JUS”. The TV Ad, deceptively suggests that a traffic officer, during a normal traffic enforcement routine, stopped a driver for inspection. But is immediately compromised, with a pack of JESA JUS, by the panicky driver and children, after which he left them to proceed without inspection in his words “You can go”, after taking the “JESA JUS”

The Ad made reference to the traffic police, as being corrupt and easily bribed by “JESA JUS”. The driver is seen, allegedly bribing a traffic officer with a packet of JESA JUS in front of children and lets them off the hook. It therefore, draws a link between the traffic officer, the driver and children. The driver and children are depicted as traffic violators.

It also promoted acts of bribery among children that you can easily buy your way out, once caught up in a compromising situation. And reinforce negative perceptions by children against police. The appearance of a lookalike traffic officer and the use of the police uniform without the express permission of the IGP is strictly prohibited, since it is fully gazetted.

In addition, the advert deceptively suggests that the police leadership endorses the product of “JESA JUS” and further supports, the campaign to market, sell and drink the product, which is not true.

As a result, we demand that the commercial firm, pulls out the traffic police content or the entire advert, and halts any further displays on TV, radios and other digital platforms. Failure to do so, will call for sanction in the civil court of law, by the Directorate of Legal and Human Rights Services.

We urge all intending marketers and Ad producers to always seek authorization or usage of the police image and content before producing a commercial advert.

Lwanga Samuel after completing his law degree in Uganda decided to move to Monrovia. He undertook bar course there but got challenges in landing on paid job.

He therefore resolved to open a firm that at the moment was operating in his apartment.

Outside his apartment was signage that reads
" Pay the lawyer 50% and only pay the balance if the case is won".

He got 324 clients in 9 months but won only 14 cases.
He says that however he had made enough by first year to be able to run a proper firm that he is still running.

Tourism Figures

Real tourism figures for a land locked country like Uganda depend mainly on airport arrivals, unless massive marketing has happened in neighbouring countries.

Let me give you Entebbe International Airport's figures and I will then suggest some ideas on how Uganda can increase the number of visitors to it.

We all are aware that Uganda has only one international standard public use airport (the other three that would qualify, Gulu, Nakasongola and Soroti are military use bases) and it's exciting that Kabalega International Airport in Hoima is coming on board.

The figures focus on the 11 months from Jan to Nov of each year, as always published by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority.

Let's take arriving passengers, only.

In 2019, we had 787,288.

In 2022, our only airport handled 666,270 arriving passengers, in 2023 we handled 849,399

In 2020 and 2021, the figures don't make sense due to COVID-19, like we all know.

We shall, today, focus on arrivals because departures actually have a big financial implication to the economy like arrivals do.

The figures unfortunately include some of you and I who go several times a year through our airport.

Again, my impact financially is so small compared to a visitor who arrives in Uganda with cash to spend.

You and I departing are going to spend elsewhere. Not useful to UGANDA in so many ways.

For your information, those departing have been more than those arriving in the same period which could be contributing to the trade deficit.

In 2019, 835,496 departed, in 2022 we had 751,345, and in 2023 we had 883,734.

That is partly because Ugandans are seeking jobs elsewhere.

Our domestic flight departures are so miserable, in 2019 only 13,429, in 2022 only 10,009, and in 2023 only 11,597.

That, compared to say kenya or Tanzania, we can't be claiming to say we are doing real tourism.

We have to humble ourselves and position our country as soon as yesterday.

We don't have proper figures in the public domain about numbers through our borders and what they come for in Uganda.

Part of our failure as a country is in our inability to analyse figures and their impact economically.

We discuss stuff in general terms, but not deeply, at all.

So our real tourism numbers don't actually go beyond 300k through our airport, it's mainly us going through our own airport.

South Africa says they get 7.6m tourists, but look at passengers handled at their airports, Oliver Tambo at Johannesburg has capacity of 28m, Capetown did 4.7m in 2023, more in 2019.

Our current target at Entebbe International Airport is to handle just about 3m passengers for both departure and arrivals combined, yet Rwanda's new airport is targeting 14m when fully done.

Our dreams are very basic and too low and we won't even hit that low target because we don't market our country at all.

Rwanda's new airport at Bugesera has been marketed for now 8yrs and our Kabalega International Airport has no marketing strategy at all, and no one is going around the world talking about it.

Our assumption is it will market itself! How? It's time to crack deals with many airlines for that airport.

What we need to appreciate as Ugandans is that when your airport has miserable numbers in arrivals, you aren't doing international business and without international, you can speak as much English as you want, but won't go anywhere as a country.
