For over 9,000 years, Turquoise has been treasured in China. Two important ancient deposits, located at Tianhu East and Heishanling in Xinjiang, were mined between 3,300 and 2,400 years ago. Chinese archaeologists conducted excavations of these two sites from 2016 to 2021, which revealed clear evidence of stone tools used for mining and uncovered ancient turquoise fragments and other relics.

Turquoise from Tianhu East range from blue, greenish blue to green, and yellowish green in color and have many unique geologic qualities. Some briefly appeared on the market in the 2010s, but further mining was banned to protect this area as an archaeological site. Researchers believe that the aluminum, phosphorus, and copper needed to form Tianhu turquoise in his hot, dry desert area were derived from black shale.
