Back in October, in lieu of a traditional Halloween party, ECI thought all the way out of the box and organized its first ever “Trunk or Treatment.” This new format was designed to deliver actual treatment and family instruction to clients in a fun seasonal party environment. In keeping with the ECI model of providing services in a natural environment, the event took place in the nearby recreational space provided by Military Veteran Peer Network (another program of BHC).
It went so well that ECI expects this to be the new standard going forward, with Fall, Winter and Spring events each year. The second such treatment day event, titled, “Walking in a Winter Treatment-Land,” was held on January 23rd. The event was another success for staff and a hit with our ECI families.
This change came in response to declining interest in the traditional holiday parties, leading staff to brainstorm new solutions that worked better for everyone. The seasonal parties will continue, now in a more controlled environment and with hands-on treatment time, which has shown to be preferable for the toddlers and parents in attendance.
“This was more than just kids coming for the candy and costumes,” said Noreen White, ECI Director. “When you have kiddos under three, having the individual opportunities for them to do things is a better party anyway. It gears the seasonal activity toward what they need in keeping with their goals. It seems like a better use of time and has kept ECI families more engaged. I think that’s why it was successful.”
If you have a child enrolled in Betty Hardwick ECI you can ask your Service Coordinator about your child attending the next treatment activity.

Mom – you do so much for everyone. It’s okay to take time to care of yourself, too. Hormonal changes, lack of sleep, and new responsibilities can sometimes make you feel like you're on an emotional roller coaster.
