The Merkel Police Department (MPD) is investigating a fatal crash that occurred today at approximately 2:10 p.m. on Interstate 20 near Farm to Market 126.
The identity of the deceased male, 43, from Abilene, Tx. is Rogelio Cortinaz.
MPD Sgt. Keri Willyerd reported:
This was a single vehicle accident involving a Chevrolet SUV that was occupied by three males, all from Abilene, traveling eastbound from Sweetwater back to Abilene. The driver of the vehicle lost control and attempted to correct, which resulted in the driver ‘over’ correcting. As a result, the vehicle left the roadway and rolled over towards and into the westbound lanes of traffic. During the rollover, two of the three occupants, the driver and rear passenger (Cortinaz), were ejected from the vehicle. First Responders arrived quickly and performed life saving measures to both subjects, with Cortinaz succumbing to his injuries on-scene. The driver was transported to an area hospital and has been listed in ‘stable’ condition. The other passenger was also transported to an area hospital with non-incapacitating (minor) injuries. Neither the driver nor Cortinaz were wearing seatbelts. Drugs/Alcohol do not appear to be a factor, however, the cause of the driver losing control is still under investigation.
Police Chief Phillip Conklin stated that this is the second fatality accident in Merkel in 2024, the most in any single year in the ten years he has been working in Merkel. Conklin further stated the importance of wearing seatbelts when traveling as both fatal accidents could likely have been avoided by simply ‘buckling up’. The MPD sends its most sincere condolences to the Cortinaz family.
Thank you to the deputies of the Taylor County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety - Northwest Texas Region for their assistance in the investigation.
