Don started working with his dad in a bicycle shop in Port Arthur, Texas, when he was 10 years old. They moved to Abilene in 1964 and purchased Moore’s bicycle shop from Ralph and Paul Moore. Don attended Jefferson junior high and Cooper high school, all the while working with his dad at the bicycle shop. When Don‘s father, Herman Smith, passed in 1996, Don took over as manager and owner of the family business. In 2004, they gave up bicycles and changed the name to Smith outdoor Power Equipment with sales and service of mowers and other outdoor equipment. They have been serving the Abilene and surrounding community now for 60 years. Don still adheres to the strong values which is father taught him, “keep your word, pay your bills, and sell good products. All of that will build up a lot of trust with your customers.“
