"Why Can’t I Control My Emotions? | Podcast episode by Alasdair Groves
Our emotions are designed to drive us to the Lord in all things. What does trusting God look like? The heart poured out to the Lord is a form of trust. It’s saying, ‘Lord, I believe that you are real. I believe that you care, and you want to know what I care about.’"

"I don’t have all wisdom and knowledge in myself. When there is a difference between my feelings and what God says, God’s words win. When there is a difference between my feelings and what many wise counselors say, I submit to the wisdom of the community."

"The Bible is this wonderfully relational approach to people that actually frees you to simultaneously be fully emotional, fully intellectual, and fully volitional.
Through the power of the Spirit, the goal is not getting the train lined up with engine, passenger car, and caboose. The goal is to get the whole humanity all functioning together simultaneously."

"We serve a God who is utterly steadfast yet strong in his feelings. His affection for his children is never waxing and waning. Whether we feel it intensely or we don’t feel it at all, his feeling toward us will never change. He will always be our refuge."

"You can come to God with a raw heart and lay your burdens before him. He will receive you in your pain and walk with you. Turn toward God and put those overwhelming feelings into words. You will be heard by the God who hears."

"We are God-made to grieve our losses, to be troubled by troubles, to be distressed at evil. And we are God-made for taking refuge in him and for growing in confidence in him."

"When you're feeling any emotion, bring it to the Lord. You can go to him with every emotion, and the goal is not to do it so that you don't feel it anymore. The goal is simply to entrust it to him."

When someone is grieving, how do we respond in ways that are helpful, not hurtful? Ed Welch proposes that two things are foundational: humility and compassion, which we learn from Jesus himself.
In his book, Someone I Know Is Grieving, Welch leans on his many years of counseling grieving people to help readers learn from their compassionate Savior how to respond to people’s sadness and hard times without advice or trying to “fix it,” but to instead hear their story, learn from others’ experiences, and depend on the Spirit for wisdom.

"The Lord founded my faith, and he is perfecting my faith. And somehow that has to become good news to me when I am discouraged that my growth is slower than I’d like it to be."

"The pace of my growth is not entirely up to me. Yes, I am to run this race with endurance. But the Lord is the author and perfecter of my faith, and with that truth comes the understanding that he, too, is involved in the pace of my growth."

"Jesus has prepared the way for a kind of rest that will not end, but that finds us settled in him, for all of eternity. May we pursue and practice, even now, resting in him. And as we do, may we find the refuge we long for from the harshness of this life."

"How do we apply the Word of God to daily life? Ask two questions: What is your current struggle? What about God in Christ connects to this? Bring one bit of Bible to one bit of life. You can’t say it all at once. Ministry, like life, goes one step at a time." —David Powlison
