"In The Back"

Words pet owners dread.

“I am going to take your pet In The Back.”

What happens there? Will he be scared? Will she be hurt? I cannot see what happens there. In The Back.

What is back there?

An assistant is snuggling with a fearful dog that took several minutes to coaxing to trust her. Now he sits in her lap as she rubs his ears and murmurs encouragement.

One of the monitors on the wall, meant to show a list of treatments, is playing Bob Ross on mute.

Assistants and vets alike pause as they walk by to smile at a happy little tree.

An emergency patient is being stabilized as careful, competent hands assess his injuries, give pain meds, start fluids, start oxygen.

A puppy is getting her first shot, along with more treats than is probably good for her, but our assistants can’t help themselves and we want our patients to love us as much as we love them. So cookies it is!

An adult dog who has been coming to The Back for his entire life dances and greets the assistants and techs as old friends before they draw his blood, trim his nails, and give him a cookie in exchange for a paw shake.

A patient is crashing.

The Back becomes quiet as a worried knot of helpers gather round, focused on the rhythmic chest compressions and the tense instructions from the doctor: place a catheter, get them intubated, breathe for them, breathe. Another dose of epinephrine. Pausing to search for a heart beat, willing a heart beat. More compressions.(In The Back is not the place the doctors go to cry when they do not succeed. When they cannot bring them back to The Back. They do that at their desks, or in the bathroom, or at home when the house is asleep.)

Music is playing In The Back. Bouncing from Country to classic Billy Joel to new Taylor Swift to Reggae depending on who is near the Alexa hub and how irritated they are with the current soundtrack.

Dogs who were scared and cowering under the bench in the room are suddenly less scared. Maybe they

As we close out National Veterinary Technician week, the vet techs of AVC would like to thank the entire staff for being so kind and giving us recognition this week. We are a proud hospital and for that we are honored to be a part of this team. We wanted to share with you a "typical" day in the life of an AVC veterinary technician. We say "typical" and laugh b/c if you are in veterinary medicine long enough, you know that every day is different and you don't know what is walking through those doors. Thank you everyone for being so kind and a joy to work with. We love you all. **WE DO NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO THE MUSIC ON THIS VIDEO**
