Should Your Mechanic Flush the Transmission Fluid?

First, it's helpful to understand the role transmission fluid plays in a car's operation. Transmission fluid helps keep mechanical components cool and lubricated, whether the gearbox is automatic or manual. Over time, the transmission's interior components wear down, and tiny particles contaminate the fluid. This could potentially lead to damage.

Getting rid of this dirty fluid makes sense, right? If it's called for in the service manual, go ahead and let your mechanic do the job.

"This shouldn't be a frequent occurrence, since a gearbox in good working order would not have metal shavings polluting the fluid over a short period of time," Ibbotson says. "If that's the case, it's likely a sign of a bigger and more complicated problem."

"There is also a distinction between simply draining and refilling a transmission vs. power-flushing the system," he says. "In a high-mileage car, power-flushing the transmission fluid can dislodge sludge and other particles, leading to clogs even after the clean fluid has been added." Flushing will also void some manufacturer's warranties.

Again, the best advice is to research your vehicle and know exactly when a transmission service is recommended.

Our customers are the best!

We had a situation everyone dreads… there’s probably only one worse thing than it being “the transmission”. We are new to the area and found Lenawee Transmission via google. We went in blind not by referral and hoped for the best. We were faced with an extenuating circumstance due to the age of our truck and limited finances available to it but I love this truck and wasn’t about to make it a lawn ornament. Thanks to the amazing, patient, trustworthy Derrick we have the ole girl back on the road! Despite our obstacles Derrick put in the time and the effort to be sure we got this repair done and done right!! I simply cannot put to words how highly we recommend Lenawee Transmission and Derrick! It’s often said you can’t trust a mechanic and they will find all sorts of reasons to jack your bill up. Derrick did not do that. He gave us his professional recommendation and we gave him our situation and we met in the middle! He was always kind and would take the time to actually explain what’s going on so we understood the inner workings of our transmission and even showed us the damage. He didn’t have to do all that but he did! Exceptional customer service to people who knew nothing about his industry.
