Q- “Cherry tree leaves are dropping too soon.”
A-This is most likely cherry leaf spot disease caused by the fungus Blumeriella jaapii. The rain can definitely be a factor. The inoculum is carried on the dropped leaves so leaf cleanup and removal is important. Some sources suggest mowing the leaves so they can decay quickly. The last resort is an appropriate fungicide.

Common chickw**d (Stellaria media) is an annual broadleaf w**d in the carnation family. It is identified by its small drop-shaped leaves, mat-forming growth habit, and tiny white flowers (each with five split petals). While commonly classed as a winter annual, chickw**d can also emerge/set seed at various other times throughout the season. Lookalikes include Mouseear chickw**d - a perennial that can be distinguished by its hairy leaves - and Thymeleaf speedwell, which has round notched leaf tips instead of pointed.
Common chickw**d is a very common problem w**d in high tunnel growing environments. The plant spreads over the ground rooting at stem nodes, but overall forms a shallow root system that is easily disrupted using tillage or hand pulling. Likewise, mulch cover can work well for w**d suppression as the w**d grows laterally rather than upwards like grasses or other broadleaves. Densely seeded winter cover crops suppress chickw**d emergence and establishment. Many pre-emergents work well on common chickw**d, along with some post-emergent products that have satisfactory control.

Horsenettle (Solanum carolinense) is a perennial nightshade w**d found mostly in southern Michigan. This w**d can be identified by its wavy leaves that are similar to eggplant but with more pointed lobes, its white or purple star-shaped flowers, and the presence of spines on the stem/petiole/leaf midrib. These thorns reduce palatability to grazing animals and make it difficult for workers to hand-pull, even with protective gloves on. This w**d prefers sandier soil textures and warm climates, originating in the southeast U.S.
Horsenettle populations build more rapidly in perennial cropping systems or in long-season crops where tillage only occurs in the spring. Rotating to shorter season grains or vegetables allows for more tillage opportunities for disrupting horsenettle growth and establishment. However, tilling may also spread around rhizome fragments that can regenerate—a common issue with using tillage to manage perennial w**ds. The most promising time to eradicate horsenettle is before it has had a chance to establish a developed root system in the field.
