May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. This PSA was made at McKinley High School by one of our newest hygiene assistants. She was a member of the HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) Club. She’ll be entering this PSA in the National HOSA competition in Texas next month!
"There are approximately 10 million people in America who are suffering from a form of mental illness. 2.9 million of those are young Asian Americans who unfortunately are 3 times less likely to seek help than any other race. Why? Because of the stigma surrounding mental health. While mental health illnesses can't be visibly seen, it is important that individuals, especially parents, learn to address them. By listening, encouraging, and supporting your child, you can break the stigma."

Dental appointments for children are important not only to evaluate tooth and gum health, but to educate them on preventing dental problems throughout their lives. A child should have her or his first dental exam about six months after the first tooth erupts from the gums, and should visit a pediatric dentist every six months thereafter.
