✨ Anesthetizing the Horse ✨
Horses need to be anesthetized for various reasons, from a routine castration to an emergency colic. No matter what that reason is, the process of anesthetizing the horse and transferring to the surgical table will remain the same.
We’ve put together a short video for everyone that is curious of that process. We hope you enjoy!

🐴Trivia Answer 🐴 This video shows live sperm thawed from frozen semen! Stallions can be collected and the semen can be frozen for future sale and use. There are many benefits of using frozen semen when breeding a mare. This includes long-term storage and the ability for mare owners to buy and store semen from a stallion of interest and save it for the right mare in the future. Mares can also be bred to stallions that have died, or are showing and not available for collection. The ability to import frozen semen from other countries also allows breeders access to quality stallions all over the world. Insemination using frozen semen should be handled carefully by a Veterinarian to insure that ovulation has occurred at the appropriate time. #PerformanceEquineVets #PEVS #AikenSC
❗️TRIVIA TUESDAY ❗️ This video was captured under a microscope. Can you tell me what is being seen? Come back tomorrow for an answer!
✨Trivia Answer! ✨ The horse in the video has luxation, or displacement, of the superficial digital flexor tendon from the calcaneal tuber (point of the hock). This can occur after disruption of the tissue that connects the tendon to the bone, which is called a retinaculum. Luxation most commonly occurs toward the outside of the leg (laterally). Horses with this condition are often acutely and severely lame and have swelling at and around the point of the hock. In some cases, the tendon is permanently luxated, and some cases exhibit a normal position of the tendon when the horse is standing, but luxation occurs when the horse moves. Treatment of this condition is conservative/medical, or surgical - depending on the individual case and severity of the luxation. #PerformanceEquineVets #PEVS #VetMed #AikenSC
✨TRIVIA ANSWER✨ The photo shows a drain tube placed in the thoracic, or chest cavity. In this case, fluid that has accumulated as a result of pleuropneumonia is being drained from the pleural space. The pleural space is the space between the chest wall and the lungs. Pleuropneumonia is defined as infection of the lungs and pleural space. In most instances, pleural infection develops secondary to bacterial pneumonia or a thoracic wound. The fluid that can accumulate in this condition is drained to allow the lungs room to expand and to decrease the bacterial load so that antibiotic treatment can be more effective. Because pleuropnuemonia can occur after long distance transportation, it is sometimes called "shipping fever". Viral respiratory infection, long distance transportation, general anesthesia, and strenuous exercise are all predisposing factors that impair the lungs' defense mechanisms, allowing secondary bacterial invasion. Horses with pleuropneumonia can have fever, depression, lethargy, and inappetence in addition to other signs of pneumonia - such as coughing and nasal discharge. In some cases pleural pain is evident as short strides, guarding, and flinching when the chest is palpated, and horses can be reluctant to move, cough, or lie down. The ultrasound below is a scan of the lungs of a horse with pleural pneumonia. You can note the roughening of the lung surface that is normally smooth and bright white. You can also note the dark fluid filled pocket with white specks, indicating pleural fluid and infection. This ultrasound is a diagnostic tool indicating the need for a thoracic drain (in the previous post) to relieve the fluid build up overtime. #PerformanceEquineVets #PEVS #equinevet #AikenSC

*Caution Graphic Video* This horse developed a large abscess on the side of his neck. He had not had any recent injections, BUT this is very similar to the reaction you might get from an inappropriately administered or placed intramuscular injection. The abscess was drained, flushed, and a protocol including antibiotics and anti-inflammatories was initiated. This guy should feel much better now!
