🐶🐶🐶Puppies, Puppies, Puppies 🐶🐶🐶

Oh goodness look at this double armful of cuties! Dr. Hamrick and her tech Victoria can barely contain all the adorable fluff of 8 Great Pyrenees puppies. This breed is well known and loved for their easy-to-train disposition. They are most commonly used as livestock guardian dogs, and they excel at that job. Each of these puppies are destined to provide companionship and service; their little imaginations are no doubt full of wonderful farm lives protecting chickens, goats and more! 🐾

We were lucky to get this sneak peek of the litter at one of their puppy vaccine appointments. We had to share this precious dose of cuteness with all of you!

Her limitless compassion and meticulous consideration of every treatment is just part of what makes her such an incredible doctor. ✨ Meet The Team Monday ✨

On this week's addition of "Meet The Team Monday" we are featuring all of our techs, both new and tried and true, who fill the gaps to keep our clinic running at optimal efficiency and our patient care at an extraordinary standard!

Sarah is an amazing new addition to our team. She is quickly becoming a well-relied upon member of our hospital staff. Offering our patients the same levels of care and consideration that she provides her own five Arabians with at home. An avid rider in her own right she competes in dressage events in Aiken and the surrounding area. Bringing that same enthusiasm she has for competing to her everyday work!

Chrissy is a very welcomed new addition to our overnight technician team. Here at Performance Equine Vets we are proud to offer 24-hour care to our patients and Chrissy is an essential part of that equation. Standing watch over critical patients, mares, foals, and everything in-between! She is an accomplished horse-woman in her own right. A trainer for the intricate sport of dressage, which she also competes in, we are so delighted to have her joining our team!

Taylor is our second night technician. Having spent a few months with us we've gotten to know her well! She has an incredible eye for detail and has become an expert in emergency care. In her personal life she is a relaxed rider, choosing to enjoy the more pleasurable aspects of horsemanship rather than competition sports. She brings that same enjoyment and level of compassion to work, always having a bright disposition and a smile on her face even during the tough moments. A source of brightness we are all grateful for!

Caroline is a floating member of the hospital staff. Moving from day-care, to partial overnights, on-call, or emergency surgery. An incredible team player she is always willing to step up to the plate and fill any position needed. Knowledgeable from years of small-animal technician work and being a member of a family owned equine boarding business. While she is also a relaxed rider who enjoys pleasure trails rather than competing, she has years of handling and medical experience with horses that makes her an invaluable member of our team!

Dr. Sharlee Lowe is presenting us with a very special case of the month! Choosing to enlighten us with an entire overview of one of her most extensive areas of work.
✨ International Health Certificates ✨

International health certificates for horses are a series of essential documents required when transporting horses across borders. These certificates help ensure the health and safety of horses and prevent the spread of diseases. The specific requirements for international health certificates can vary between countries, so it's crucial to check with the relevant authorities in both the departure and destination countries.

Here are some general guidelines and information regarding international health certificates for horses:

🐴 Contact the Relevant Authorities: For all horses exporting from the United States, the highest authority is the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), which is a branch of the USDA

🐴 Veterinary Examination: The horse will be receive a thorough examination prior to departure from South Carolina, as well as APHIS veterinarians prior to boarding a plane or ship

🐴 Required Vaccinations: Each destination has their own set of required vaccinations, which must be administered within a set time frame prior to travel

🐴 Required Disease Testing: Negative testing to rule out diseases ranging from Equine Infectious Anemia to Contagious Equine Metritis to prevent international outbreaks

🐴 Quarantine: Quarantines can vary from two days to two months depending on destination!

🐴 Microchipping: Microchips are often required in order to positively identify the equine

🐴 Interstate Transportation Requirements: Interstate health certificates are required since the major east coast ports of departure are Miami and New York

🐴 Documentation: Once all the above protocols have been followed, Dr. Lowe must submit a multi-page document to the authorities for final approval on travel

It's crucial to start the process well in advance of the planned travel date, as the preparation and documentation can take anywhere from days to months of preparation depending on the destination. Working closely with a knowledgeable veterinarian like Dr. Lowe who is experienced in international horse travel and contacting the relevant authorities will help ensure a smooth and compliant process.

In the last year alone she helped horses make it safely to destinations such as:

✈️ Canada
✈️ Bermuda
✈️ Argentina
✈️ Belgium
✈️ Germany
✈️ United Kingdom
✈️ Mexico

We plan to help many more make it to their intended destinations this year! Contact us today if you are considering sending or receiving a horse from another country, we are here to help with expert hands!

Spring is right around the corner and with that in mind Performance Equine Vets wants to remind everyone about regular equine maintenance: Vaccines and Coggins tests!

We all know that our equine partners need to be vaccinated. It's common for owners to refer to their vaccine schedules with the terms "spring" or "fall" vaccines. However, that doesn't detail exactly what kind of vaccines may be needed. So we are here to help you figure that out.

Adult Equine vaccines include:
* 6-way (Eastern and Western Equine Encephalomyelitis - EEE and WEE, West Nile Virus - WNV, Rhinopneumonitis - EHV 1/4, Influenza, Tetanus)
* Flu-Rhino (Influenza and Herpesvirus types 1 and 4 (Rhinopneumonitis)
* Rabies

While these aren't the only vaccines that are available they are the most commonly given. Adult horses should receive a full 6-way vaccine (or equivalent vaccinations for their lifestyle) every 6 months, and a rabies once a year.

Foals, like any other young animal, need a different vaccine schedule with booster shots at different intervals to achieve full immunity by the time they reach adulthood.

Foal Vaccines and preventative health care include:
* 2 months - Deworming Fenbendazole
* 4 months - Deworming Fenbendazole (test f***l sample before deworming)
* 5 Months - Eastern, Western, West Nile Virus, Tetanus
* 6 months - 6-way, Rabies
* 6 months - Dewormer chosen depends on results of f***l test (Equimax or Panacur)
* 7 months - 6-way, Rabies
* 9 months - Deworm with Equimax
* 10 months - 6-way

Lastly, all horses should have a Coggins drawn once a year to test for Equine Infectious Anemia. This is a disease that there is no vaccine or treatment for. Additionally, infection is often inapparent and results in a lifelong carrier state if the horse survives the acute phase of the infection. EIA is found widely throughout the world. EIA is not a threat to human health, but it is a reportable animal disease in all states The only protection against it is regular testing and awareness.

We hope this helps you all make informed decisions on your equine partners health this year, and always we are here to answer any further questions and service your needs!

An invaluable source of knowledge and wisdom that we are all extremely grateful to have on our team!

Lauren has become more than just a technician to Dr. Farrell. She has become the anesthesia superstar for both surgeons. Taking on the incredibly difficult task of being the one to see our equine patients safely through all of their surgical procedures. She is not only incredible at her job, but an incredible rider as well. Spending her free time riding her own horse as much as she can, also an avid enjoyer of Aiken's many eventing activities!

Ultrasound or Ultralame?! Oh boy that was a bad pun! 🤣

However, it's no laughing matter when it comes to your equine partner's tendon and ligament health. When things are going well, we don't always think about tendons and ligaments as joint health, gut health, and behavioral issues can be hvery prominent and more readily noticed in early stages of ailment. Investigating soft tissue structures is exactly what an ultrasound is used for, and in the case of tendons and ligaments it is a highly valuable diagnostic tool.

Ultrasound can be used to confidently diagnose tendon/ligament tears, inflammation, and tenosynovitis (fluid and/or inflammation in the tendon sheath). The dynamic nature of the examination allows for evaluation of the integrity of the structure and allows the veterinarian to assess the progress of soft tissue healing. This information helps guide rehabilitation and exercise protocols throughout the healing process after a soft tissue injury.

Below we've included some great descriptive images from a case study published in Volume 8, 2015 of the Vet World open access journals. Feel free to click the link below if you are interested in reading about all 40 horses included in their study and what their general findings were!

She is the complete support to our Internists and Surgeons, an indescribable value that we are all so appreciative for!

Mandy is an incredible working mother of 3. Those instincts serve her well as a technician for all of our hospitalized patients. Offering them levels of care and consideration that go above and beyond the scope of just their medical needs. There isn't a patient that's come through our doors that hasn't been touched by her incredible grace and knowledge!

Ultrasonography uses in the equine thoracic and abdominal cavities are incredibly broad. In the thoracic cavity the heart and the surface of normal lungs can be well visualized in most horses, while the abdominal cavity houses...everything else. This can make it a bit trickier to ultrasound the abdomen but nonetheless this incredible technology and the skilled veterinarians who use it make it a possibility.

In the thoracic cavity the lungs take up the majority of the space. This makes sense as your horse needs a large, capable, filter to achieve all of their gas exchange needs. Air is a nearly perfect reflector to the types of sound waves an ultrasound uses, so the sound waves cannot pe*****te through air filled lung. This makes the normal surface of lung tissue appear as a clear line with small mirror images of that line cascading down. As the horse inhales and exhales their lungs slide along their diaphragm and in normal horses this line will move in "the gliding sign" back and forth. Abnormalities that might be present can be visualized, especially abscesses and collapsed lung with less air content. Fluid accumulations can be distinguished with relative accuracy because the ultrasound waves pe*****te well through fluid. The heart structure and function can also be assessed with ultrasound; this is called an echocardiogram.

When it comes to the abdomen, everything is more mobile. The incredible movement and sheer amount of organ structures involved in a horse's digestion means that not all of the abdomen can be visualized. However, ultrasound is still the optimal choice for rapid diagnostic imaging of many structures. Radiographs are the gold standard for some ailments such as the detection of sand, but ultrasound offers the veterinarian the chance to quickly assess and diagnose multiple abnormalities. For example, veterinarians can assess things like intestinal motility, intestinal wall thickness, distention of small intestine or stomach, liver/spleen/kidney appearance, and more.

Having more information is always the goal in advanced equine medicine and the ultrasound offers that in spades!

We have included images from AAEP's 58th edition clinical studies textbook that give clear markers of some of the structures and abnormalities described above. If you'd like to read more in-depth about them and the medically intricate world of ultrasonography uses in the equine thoracic and abdominal cavities feel free to follow the links below!
