Our Story
The 1886 Log House is a hand-hewed, dove-tailed log cabin built in 1886. It was moved to it’s current location in 1992. It took us several years to restore the house to its present condition, including the addition of a large wrap-around porch. During the restoration process, careful attention was paid to maintain the historical integrity and charm of this rustic structure. There is no doubt that it is a one of a kind antique shop.
From the time it was built, The 1886 Log House has had a fascinating history. It began as a two bedroom, two story log home nestled on a 120 acre farm just a few miles from it’s current location. A large barn was soon added and the family story goes that the native American Indians often visited the barn looking for eggs and milk; which were always left for them by the rear barn door. In return the Indians left fish and wild game for the family. A root cellar with an outside entrance was added under the kitchen. The garden vegetables and canned goods were stored there. A favorite family story tells about the bear that got in the root cellar and ate most of the fall crop of potatoes.
There were 13 children born in the log home, 7 boys and 6 girls. A large 6 plate cook stove was the master of one kitchen wall. It cooked the meals, heated the water, dried the diapers and mittens and heated a good share of the home. A pot bellied stove stood in the living room. The original floors were made of pine planks. The flooring on the first floor was replaced in 1920 with maple and fir. The upstairs bedrooms retain the original plank flooring. The original ladder that lead upstairs has been replaced with sturdy pine steps. Cold winters required mud and straw “insulation” to be put on the bedroom log walls. Bed mats that could be rolled up and tucked under the eves served as beds for the children. Mom and Dad slept in the living room.
Presently we display 2,100 square feet of vintage antiques and collectables. We invite you to step back in time and visit our shop. We believe you will like the up-north setting with many fine pieces of oak, walnut, pine furniture and the latest in shabby chic. Always crocks, pottery, fine glassware, jewelry, linens, vintage garden, fishing lures, duck decoys, lanterns, RR, automotive, and so much more.
We are open May through October from 10AM to 5PM , Friday, Saturday and Sunday or by appointment. We encourage you to call us before your visit as we do several weekend antique shows throughout the summer, and we are closed on those weekends. 218-820-2324. On FB see our list of antique shows we do through out the summer and the craft shows we do in the fall and winter.
