Bonne Fête Nationale! It’s Bastille Day! 🇫🇷
The French Revolution lasted fifteen years – from the storming of the Bastille in 1789 until Napoleon crowned himself Emperor in 1804. As the Revolution became more radical, people who looked too fashionable were liable to be denounced as counterrevolutionaries. After Robespierre’s ex*****on in July 1794, the revolutionary Terror ended, and fashion reemerged, especially among the “gilded youth” known as the Incroyables and Merveilleux.
The striped silk jacket is typical of the styles worn by the Incroyables. Next to it is a 1992 ensemble by John Galliano who, throughout his career, repeatedly created fashions evoking the Incroyables and Merveilleux.

Happy Birthday Zelda Wynn Valdes!
Born on this day in 1905, Wynn Valdes became the first African American woman to own a boutique in New York. Her glamorous figure-hugging evening dresses became a staple for female entertainers such as Josephine Baker and Ella Fitzgerald. As co-founder of the National Association of Fashion and Accessory Designers, she served as a mentor to a number of early African American designers. Later in her career, she was hired by the Dance Theatre of Harlem, to design costumes, which she did until her retirement in the late 1980s.

Dior
The incredible talents of Haute Couture level design and dress making.
Inside the secretive world of the ateliers, the Autumn-Winter 2020-2021 Haute Couture collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri, on.dior.com/couture-aw2021, took shape through a process of invention typical of the famed Dior savoir-faire that saw each piece created twice - once in the usual size, and again in scaled down miniature. While both received the same meticulous attention to detail, each posed its own unique challenges to the petites mains.
