You all know I love a luxurious vacation, but sometimes the very best kind of tourism is when we can give back to the stunning places we travel to and enjoy.

My partner Dave and I first visited the Faroe Islands about 7 years ago on a cruise stop. Dave was in love with the destination before we even docked and was even more in love after a 10-hour visit. A year or so later, Faroe started the ‘Closed for Maintenance Program’ I emailed the opportunity to Dave, but he missed being included in the first come, first serve setup. Then shortly after, the world was closed due to the pandemic, but finally, in 2022 the program was open again, he applied and was accepted.

He emailed me while I was in Africa convinced there was no way he could go due to conflict with the other plans. I’m never one to be that easily defeated and I assured him it was possible. The conflict was centered around a stay at Villa Maria Luigia, which was a long-awaited Valentine’s gift in 2020 and an experience of a lifetime that had been pushed for three years and couldn’t be extended again. I shifted all the dates to arrive sooner, which made the stay in Italy a little awkward, but it was a self-drive experience, and I knew how important the Closed for Maintenance experience was….

I landed the Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving from my African photo Safari and got up before dawn on Thanksgiving Day to work on how to make everything all fit, at 7:45 a.m. I woke up Dave for final approval on his travels, and at 7:58 am, I hit send for the 8 am deadline.

We landed in Madrid, drove to Bologna for a few nights, then to Modena, and completed the trip with a final two nights in Milan. I flew home and Dave went straight on to the Faroe Islands via Copenhagen to participate in the Closed for Maintenance program. Success! And something he is so proud to have been a participant in.
