One of the big things we did in the last couple years was try to actively nurture a healthy mantis population. While this years are still on the small size, they do eat all kinds of pests. But when they get to full size, I'll often see them munching on Japanese beetles. So far this year, the Japanese beetles have been pretty low in population. It's very encouraging!

I made this graphic for a customer to help explain how to use rabbit for the best culinary experience. When I part a rabbit, I do an 8 piece part: 2x front legs, 2x rear legs, 2x belly flaps, 1x saddle, and 1x loin/tenderloin.

The front and rear legs can be prepared similar to chicken legs/wings. Breaded and fried is good, barbequed is great. Oven baked works well.

The saddle doesn't have a lot of meat in it. It's best used to make bone broth or flavor a soup. You can save all the bones from the others after they're eaten, and get a good amount of broth.

The belly flaps are really thin muscle. Think of them like Canadian bacon. You can slice in strips to serve as more "bacon" style, or cook whole and make something more similar to a slice of ham. Those will be found inside the saddle.

The loin and the tenderloin are the best part of the rabbit. They are the most tender (of course), and are fantastic grilled or baked. You can also cut the strips off and debone it to make something more like chicken tenders, or chop the tenders into chunks to make something like beef tips (my personal favourite).

Trying something new in the greenhouse this summer: Aquaponic mini tomatoes. This is a determinate variety that produces tons of small cherry tomatoes that are orange and low acid. The hope is that I could succession plant these for harvest all year round. So far, the summer trial is a win! :)

I reported a scammer in a rabbit group I'm in. I guess they didn't like that very much... Anyways, if any ACTUAL customers want to leave a review, I'd appreciate it :)

Moon Farm Produce Bundles Moon Farm

Important Announcement: CSA Delivery day moving to Tuesdays.

Over the last couple years running the CSA, we've delivered on Mondays because it made sense. It was close to harvest day (Thursday/Fridays during market season), and it was a day with nothing else typically scheduled. In the past, it was manageable to pack and prepare on Sunday evening, or even on Monday morning and still have time to deliver to everyone.

As we continue to grow, it's becoming more evident that I need more time to prepare for the delivery to avoid delays in start time on delivery day, to ensure best quality, and continue to provide the best possible experience to our friends.

Looking forward to Sunday holidays coming up (Easter, for example), and events we do (like rabbit shows on Sundays), I am very thankful to now have the issue of simply too much preparation to get done before delivering on Mondays.

Moving the delivery day to Tuesdays will mean less logistical mistakes, working out technical errors to avoid delays, and frankly a much better work-life balance. I'm not complaining, I'm actually quite thankful that it has come to this point where the time after the farmers' market on Saturday and after any events on Sunday is just not enough to keep Monday on schedule.

Moving forward, Monday will be dedicated to preparing the CSA, harvesting fresh, and planning the route. Tuesdays we will begin deliveries starting very early (aiming for 6am), so we can complete the route before dinner.
