We are taking you to Spain for "Happy Father's Day" SUNDAY BRUNCH WITH TUESDAY MUSICAL today! Maybe some tapas and Roja wine and a little flamenco-inspired music from classical guitarist Nik Divall. Nik performed “Leyenda” by Isaac Albeniz in the 2024 Final Round/Winners Concert of the Tuesday Musical Scholarship Competition in May. He earned his spot by winning the Margaret Watts Hunter Scholarship for the Classical Guitar category of the 2024 Annual Tuesdsay Musical Scholarship Competition in April at Guzzetta Hall on The University of Akron campus. The category was a adjudicated by Bryan Reichert, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory faculty. Nik, whose home is , is completing an undergraduate degree in classical guitar performance at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study theorbo at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, Germany, beginning this fall. He is also the two-year running recipient of Tuesday Musical’s Margaret Watts Hunter Scholarship, has placed second in the Adelaide International Guitar Competition, won the collegiate round of the Louisville Guitar Competition, and performed a solo recital with the Sydney Classical Guitar Society. He has performed on the theorbo, archlute, and baroque guitar with two Chicago-based groups: Twisted Pearl and the Bach and Beethoven Experience. Fulbright Association Tuesday Musical Association
Today, we announced that the City of Akron will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Akron’s own Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival! Continuing its legacy of presenting free professional dance performances in city parks, the dance festival will once again offer three weeks filled with dance experience opportunities from July 26 through August 10. Ayoola Sunmiboye, percussionist, brings the moves to SUNDAY BRUNCH WITH TUESDAY MUSICAL with his steel pan performance at the 2024 Final Round/Winners Concert of the Tuesday Musical Scholarship Competition in May. He played “A Visit to Hell, mvt. III & IV” by Liam Teague. A student at The University of Akron School of Music, Ayoola won the Dr. Larry D. Snider Scholarship in the Scholarship Competition’s Marimba/Classical Steel Pan category adjudicated by Glenn Schaft, who is on the music faculty at Youngstown State University. Ayoola is from Nigeria. The Tuesday Musical Association is dedicated to supporting musical education for young people. The annual scholarship competition is open to college music students with ties to Ohio. Begun in 1955 with support from donors and volunteers, the competition is widely recognized as the best of its kind in Ohio and awards more than $40,000 in scholarships each year. Bravo! Violinist Karisa Chiu and pianist Jiusi (Jameson) Zhang won the two top awards in our 2024 Annual Scholarship Competition Final Round/Winners Concert held today, May 5. Zhang also won the People’s Choice Award.
Chiu, a master’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, won the $2,000 Arden J. Yockey Scholarship. Zhang, a senior at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, won the $1,000 Arden J. Yockey Scholarship and also garnered the most audience votes to win the John M. Ream Jr. DDS People’s Choice Award.
The final-round judges were Adam Roberts, a composition faculty member at Kent State University School of Music, and Domenico Boyagian, music director of Cleveland Opera Theater and the Suburban Symphony Orchestra.

The standing ovation at this week's Tuesday Musical Association Akron Concert Series pulled Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis back on stage for one more selection: "Paris Stairs," a piece Duke Ellington wrote with Louis Armstrong for the 1961 movie “Paris Blues” starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Sidney Poitier and Diahann Carroll.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis played such Duke Ellington hits as “Paris Stairs,” “Ad Lib on Nippon,” “The Mooch,” “Big Fat Alice's Blues” and “Chinoiserie.” The concert closed out the stellar Tuesday Musical Association Akron Concert Series for 2023-2024. Students were happy to volunteer the name of their schools and the instruments they play when we asked at the Tuesday Musical Association Akron Concert Series concert with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. In the house were music students from Coventry High School, Firestone Community Learning Center, Jackson Milton Local School District High School, Medina High School (Ohio) and Western Reserve Academy.
