Reese Brannon was born with Autism Spectrum Disorder, formerly known as Aspergers. I’ll never forget meeting him for the first time. I was sitting on the second row in a freshman biology class at Auburn University with 300+ people and knew something special was going on when he walked in. He proceeded to ask every single person on the second row, person after person, why no one was sitting on the front row. No one answered. Finally I got up and told him that no one was sitting in the front row because it was the front row and no one wanted to sit there. He asked me if he could sit on the front row in front of me. I said sure. He did. Little did I know that was the beginning of a friendship that has spanned 10+ years.
Reese is amazing. He is smart and well-read, opinionated and well-meaning. I never have to wonder where he stands on an issue. And I have never wondered if he was telling me the truth.
My life is better because of his presence, so I thought I would give him a chance to tell his story with the hope that maybe that would help us get a little better sense of what it might be like to live life in his shoes.
This clip was his advice. Isn’t it so wise? That’s what I always get with him. Very wise things mixed with outrageously honest assessments. And pure friendship. That’s my favorite part.

Brandon is the director of spiritual formation at Restoration Academy in Fairfield, Alabama and the pastor of Victory City Birmingham, a church in Tarrant, Alabama.
