The Top-1 Most Practical Marketing Idea I’ve Found In The Last 5 Years: Mindshare. How It Works & How To Use It
🧵
Mindshare is the space available in a person’s mind for a specific kind of business.
Market share of the mind, if you will. There are only 1–5 open slots per business-type.
But I see businesses constantly not account for this in their marketing strategy.
**HOW IT WORKS**
The fact is we all have a finite amount of room in our memory.
And many things are battling constantly to occupy some of that space, including competitors.
Most entrepreneurs don't recognize that their business is just one of the many things competing for that coveted, limited space in their customer’s mind.
Imagine that you’re brain is like a computer.
That computer has lots of folders that categorize and contain information, AKA memories. It’s easy to imagine that your brain has a particular folder for many different kinds of businesses.
So you have a folder for doctors, a folder for lawyers, a folder for mechanics, and so on.
That means at this very moment you have a folder that contains businesses that are like your business.
Well, so does everyone else.
And that is how Mindshare works.
Studies show we all have space for between one and five companies inside a given category depending on how often we use that kind of product or service.
We usually do business with the top one or two.
So now the game should be obvious:
he who embeds his business in the top one or two slots wins.
**HOW TO USE IT**
2 aspects of your marketing strategy move the needle.
The first factor is frequency.
Studies show that a consumer needs to hear about a business at least 36 times per year.
The more the better.
The second factor is reputation.
This comes *after* someone decides to purchase. It also determines whether they purchase again in the future or refer friends and family.
How well does your product or service deliver on the promise it makes to the customer?
If your product or service sucks, then it doesn’t matter how good your marketing is.
In order to optimize your company for capturing mindshare,
(1) figure out how to generate more high-quality touches to your customer,
and (2) continually iterate on how well you execute the function of your organization.
Learn how to capture more mindshare (and make more money) with entrepreneurial writing.

“17 year old makes 3 million online in 2024”
Aren’t you sick of reading headlines like these? What the hell are these people doing to make such huge sums of cash online?
I did a year's worth of research, and what I found shocked me:
It became obvious that the key was building an audience because audiences scale.
But I hated the idea of learning video to talk to a camera for a living. I had no idea there was another way.
The best way to build an audience without learning video is by writing.
Why is audience building the key to unlocking big cash flow online?
Building an audience online is the secret behind all of these outrageous headlines for at least two reasons.
First, it creates the possibility for exponential growth overtime.
The larger the audience grows, the more momentum it gains, the faster it grows, the more momentum it gains, and so on. A self-reinforcing loop.
Jim Collins calls these loops “flywheels” in his book Good to Great, and they are the secret to creating massive growth in every industry and every business.
Second, it pairs perfectly with product and service sales.
Especially digital products with a zero cost of manufacturing. If you have an audience, you can create products and services to offer your audience.
If some percentage of your audience purchases those products and services and you grow that audience massively, then you grow your sales numbers in the exact same proportion.
That is how audience growth leads directly to massive revenue.
Why is writing the 1 skill that introverts need to rake cash online?
Building an audience comes down to your ability to capture attention, then direct it. This is the essence of audience building.
And there are levels to this game.
The audience that Mark Zuckerberg built on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp is upwards of 3 billion. That’s one level.
The audience that MrBeast has built on YouTube is more than 100 million.
That is several orders of magnitude smaller than Zuckerberg.
The fact remains that MrBeast is earning outrageous sums and doing a lot of good in the world while he’s at it.
I have built an audience of 3000 people in a year in my writing business. That is several orders of magnitude smaller than MrBeast.
But it’s a start.
And that is my whole point with this piece.
If you are reading this, you have so much to give the world and so many cool things to build. Don’t let a little introversion keep you from getting into the game.
You don’t have to learn video.
All you have to do is write…a lot.
Do it badly, but be sure to do it. Don’t give any of your precious attention over to concern about the number of likes or comments or views your posts get.
Trust the process and be consistent.
The 1 skill introverts need to rake cash online without talking on camera is writing.
“Okay, I’m sold on writing. But where do I even start?”
Don’t overcomplicate this.
Take a page out of Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way and try her technique called morning pages.
Three continuous pages of stream-of-consciousness writing.
Just get going and don’t stop until you are finished. There are no other rules. Do this for 28 days in a row, and your life will never be the same.

"Curiosity is an adventure out of the what’s and into the why’s"
Most entrepreneurs are terrible at organization.
They cobble together different tools to build a business that looks more like Frankenstein than Amazon. I used to be like them. Then I rebuilt a dashboard into the Notion App.

The ABCs of Salesmanship:
Attunement: the ability to bring one’s actions and outlook into harmony with other people
Buoyancy- the ability to remain afloat amidst an ocean of rejection
Clarity- the capacity to help others identify/clarify problems they didn’t realize they had
Tony Fadell, inventor of the iPhone, once said:
“The product isn’t only the product. It’s the whole user experience. A chain that begins the moment someone hears about your brand and ends When your product disappears from their life.”
Remember this in your product design.
Plato might be the greatest content repackager of all time.
Would you think less of him if all his ideas were really Socrates' ideas? I doubt it. We still read Plato to this day.
Remember this when planning your content.
You aren't what's happening to you.
You are what's happening inside you.
When bad things are happening to you, remember that something important is happening inside you.
A great question for creating behavior change in others:
Who do I have to become to call forth the person I want them to be?
Blurring work and play is the ultimate life hack.
Getting paid to play is the biggest flex.

I just want to say that Bridgerton is one of the greatest love stories ever told.
I have this theory that stories are like women:
•it’s impossible to live without either of them
•they come in different shapes and sizes, different genres, if you will, and everyone has different preferences
•You can rate them both from 1-10.
•and inside each genre there are many 10s, each perfectly beautiful in their unique way
For me, 10 represents the limit of how perfect a thing can be.
So there can be many 10s inside a given genre with each of them representing the absolute limit of beauty. Others can be as beautiful, but none can be more beautiful.
I was reminded of the theory after finishing the 3rd season of Bridgerton last night.
For me, Bridgerton is as good a love story as it is possible to tell. It is a 10/10. All 3 seasons tell a beautiful master story, yet each season stands alone by being based on different main characters.
Truly genius.
And we get to see how different preferences can turn some people into 10s for others depending on preferences with the leading woman of each season looking completely different from the others, widely varying in personality, strengths, and weaknesses.
Yet it could not be more apparent that the men who fall in love with them consider them to be 10s residing at the very limit of how beautiful a person can be.
Highly recommend, if you’re a sucker for a little romance like me.
I may not have all the answers, but I’m certain of this:
Failure to achieve a big goal will always feel safer than comfortable complacency.
6 Levels of Modern Entrepreneurship:
1. Suffering- from the state of the world and/or yourself
2. Dreaming- about the state of the world and/or yourself if the problems creating your unhappiness were solved
3. Learning- why the problems exist & what you can do it them
4. Building- products/services to solve the problems
5. Selling- products and services to solve the problems for customers and generate revenue
6. Iterating-products and services to solve problems better an better and generate more and more revenue
If you want to start a business in 2024, adopt this one high-value habit:
Daily Writing.
•Don't know what business to start? Write about it.
•Don't know how to start a business? Write about it.
The entire entrepreneurial journey is downstream from daily writing.

The strength of your negotiating position is equal to the strength of your alternative.
