VA-Update on Change Health Care Cyber Incident - 2/28/2024

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) continues to closely monitor impacts associated with the recent Change Healthcare cyber incident, and there are a few updates to share as of today.

· First, the issue impacting some Veteran prescription refills has been resolved. VA is working to make sure that all previously impacted Veterans have their prescriptions filled, and additional prescriptions should not be impacted. Yesterday, we notified you that there was an issue with certain prescriptions being transmitted from VA Medical Centers (VAMC) to our Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacies (CMOP) for fulfillment and distribution. This issue is now resolved, and VA has provided guidance to all VA medical centers about how to automatically process and clear the error status, thus enabling the impacted prescriptions to transmit to CMOP for processing. VAMC facilities were instructed to prioritize high-priority/time sensitive medications, and these prescriptions will be moved to the front of CMOP dispensing queues. For any Veterans urgently needing medications, there are processes in place to ensure they are fulfilled and sent quickly or even picked up in person at a local VA medical center pharmacy if a Veteran prefers to do so.

· Due to this cyber incident, Optum and TriWest – the VA Community Care Network Third Party Administrators – are currently unable to submit community care claims invoices to VA for payment (the impacts to TriWest are more immediate at this time). This means the TPAs cannot be reimbursed for their outgoing claims payments to community care network providers. While this issue has no known Veteran impact at this time, VA is working closely with both Optum and TriWest is evaluating any and all possible mitigation solutions to get these issues addressed as soon as possible. VA will continue to monitor impacts and provide updates as we can. VA is also evaluating impacts to health care claims paid directly by VA and will provide additional updates on this tomorrow.

· VA has also identified increased call volume at the enterprise call centers, primarily related to Pharmacy questions. To date, VA has successfully handled all case management related to identified pharmacy issues. VA encourages Veterans who experience problems filling a prescription should contact their local pharmacy or 1-800-MyVA411 (1-800-698-2411).
