Happy Buddha’s Birthday!

This week we celebrate the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Shakyamuni, the historical founder of Buddhism. In Japanese Buddhist lineages we celebrate this joyful occasion on April 8th. So, Happy Buddha's Birthday! 2500 years ago in Northern India, a young man left his home to find the solution to the suffering that afflicts the human condition. Having discovered the wisdom of the Dharma, Siddhartha Gautama came to be known as the Buddha, or awakened one. In our Jodo Shinshu tradition, Amida Buddha embodies the light of enlightenment to which Siddhartha awakened. And the vow of Amida Buddha expresses the fundamental intention of Shakyamuni Buddha, that all beings attain awakening.

Buddha's birthday celebrations, known in Japan as hana matsuri, or "flower festival," include the creation of a flower pavilion, and the sprinkling of sweet tea on an image of Buddha. Join us this week as our Dharma School kids help enact the story of Buddha's birth and enlightenment!

Opinion: Grieving without God is one thing. Grieving without God's people is another I'm among the many Americans today who are nonreligious. As I process my mom's death, I find myself missing the support that comes with being part of a faith community.
