Headlamp restoration
Restoring the headlamp lenses on your vehicle may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually pretty simple. First I use a no residue masking tape to mask off painted surfaces, chrome, and coarse plastics that may surround the headlamp unit. Once all delicate areas are masked off we can begin to wet sand the lenses using a high grit sandpaper, such as 2500-3000 grit. Keeping the lenses lubricated with water while sanding is very important. Several passes may need to be done to achieve a thorough sanding. It is important to try and keep the same amount of pressure consistent on all areas of the lens, if not there may be subtle dull spots left on the lens after the process is complete.
After the lenses have been sanded thoroughly dry any residual water that may be trapped in panel seams around the headlamp units. Using a high speed buffer that has a 3" buffer head installed, in combination with a 3" wool and foam pad buff the lenses using a light compound with the wool pad. Move to the 3" foam pad and finish the lens with the polish, repeat as necessary. This process greatly improves lens clarity, light pe*******on, and lasts longer than those store bought methods. I then apply Fantastic Plastic to each lens by hand. Fantastic Plastic enhances the clarity of the lenses and protects against UV light. A headlamp restoration can be a huge money saver! I used to work at a dealership and there had been many times were customers wished to purchase new headlamp units, which could be $600 or more! The service advisors would always direct them to the detail department, to have a restoration done. The customers were always shocked when they saw their car completed that those headlamps could look new again!
If you have hazy headlamps that you would like restored I perform such services! $25 per headlamp.
A set of dismounted wheels I cleaned and polished. There were plastic chrome hub caps as well that I neglected to photograph.
The Exterior detail encompasses the following:
1. The vehicle will first receive a prep and wash. The preparation process for the exterior detail is a little more thorough than the interior service. Wheel wells and wheels are cleaned with a degreasing agent that is diluted to safe ratios. The wheel wells receive multiple rinses and the outer portion of the well (closest to outside) is scrubbed with a durable semi-soft brush. Wheels are varied and have many different designs which can be difficult to clean. I use a durable soft, long bristled brush in combination with soft terry cloths to help minimize potential surface scratches. Wheels may need multiple passes to ensure a thorough cleaning.
The exterior of the vehicle will then receive a thorough washing. A degreasing cleaner (same used for wheels and wells) may need to be applied to areas of high filth. The degreaser help breaks down moss growth, grime, brake dust, greases, etc. I also employ the use of a bug remover cleaner which emulsifies residual bug debris.
I also have knowledge in the removal of hard water spots. There are a few methods in which that can be done. The most effective method is done during the vehicle prep. I use a highly diluted acidic cleaner that is used strictly for water spot removal. The vehicle wash soap I use is a neutralizer and is used directly after the acid is applied.
The vehicle prep is important and can be a lengthy process. Outdoor conditions have an impact on vehicle preps. With warm weather and sunny skies I must use caution with the cleaners I listed above. Heat can be terrible for auto detailing, especially with cleaners, polishes, waxes, etc. Applying such items to hot surfaces can be dangerous! During such conditions I shrink my workspace down, for example: Instead of applying degreaser to two or more panels at a time maybe even the entire side of a vehicle, I limit down to one panel. If the panel is large like a roof or a hood, I break that panel down into smaller sections until the whole panel is complete. This method greatly reduces the chances of chemical etching onto glass, or painted surfaces, but increases length of time to complete the job.
The winter months can be different however. With overcast skies and cool temperatures makes great conditions for detailing! Sure the rain and wind and cold may be biting, but the work is easier! The cool temperatures greatly improve the working life of the cleaners and makes the job a little less time sensitive. I can also expand my working area as well.
3. With the completion of the vehicle prep introduces the next phase in the process. I use a chamois to dry the exterior of the vehicle and allow the vehicle to drip dry as much as possible. I then use compressed air to drive out water that is trapped within panel seams, emblems and logos, door handle/sideview mirror bezels, skirt panels, light lenses, etc. Removing as much water as possible is important for the buffing process.
I then examine the painted surfaces and glass for stuck on contaminants such as tree sap, road tar, transfer marks (like shoe scuffs), and foreign paint transfer. I use a solvent cleaner that removes such contaminants and leaves the panel ready for further work. I remove as much as I can possibly find, sometimes you can't always see the contaminants, sometimes you feel them.
4. With the surface of the vehicle prepped and free of contaminants it is time to begin the buffing process. There are two different buffers that I use, the high speed buffer and the random orbital buffer. The high speed buffer spins in one direction at speeds ranging from 600rpm to 3500rpm. The random orbital buffer is different in its rotational pattern, it spins while oscillating at the same time. This "random" rotation is purposeful, this style of buffer does not swirl the clearcoat like a high speed buffer can. High speed buffers are aggressive and if not used correctly can severely swirl, even damage a painted panel. A swirl is the concentration of the clearcoat manipulated into one area. When you are buffing a car regardless of what kind of buffer you are using there is friction, that friction creates heat; that heat is what manipulates the clearcoat. The high speed buffer spins in only one direction bringing the clearcoat in only one direction. Panels buffed with high speed buffers usually need to be buffed the opposite direction, to help "iron out" the swirls.
In addition to different styled buffers there is also a series of different buffer pads too. The high speed buffer has a larger head while the random orbital is smaller, so the two machines use different pads. The high speed buffer has pads that are made from foam that range in density and absorption. The higher density foam the lower the absorption rate, the lower density the higher the absorption. Each pad has two variants, a waffle styled pad face and a flat pad face. The waffle style pad helps disperse heat, while the flat face does not. Flat faced pads are just as effective as their waffle counterparts, you just have to be mindful of the heat!
There are tons of compounds, polishes, and waxes out there, and it may be confusing on what they do. Compounds are aggressive and very abrasive and usually the beginning step. You don't always start with compounds, they can do damage! Painted surfaces that are oxidized, heavily scratched, covered in contaminants, etc. usually require compounds. With compounds you make it worse before you make it better. Polishes are what is used to clean up after the compound. Polishes are mildly abrasive and can be used as a first step, not all cars need compound. Polishes bring depth and clarity back and deepen your vehicles color.
Finally we are ready to apply wax. Waxes have little to no abrasive qualities to them. Wax helps seal in the polish and protects against dirt, UV light.
When buffing, using the right pad in combination with the correct compound, polish, or wax is crucial to the process. Buffing can easily ruin a painted surface and must be taken seriously.

The interior detail compasses the following:
1. Complementary car wash alongside vehicle prep. The vehicle prep includes the cleaning of door, trunk, and sunroof jambs. Fuel receiving compartments may also be cleaned if deemed safe.
2. The vehicles interior will then combed for any garbage hiding in areas of low visibility. Other items that may be found will be kept for customer. Compressed air is used to rifle through areas that are cramped and tight, this air helps loosen debris from stubborn hard to reach areas. The vehicles upholstery and carpets will receive multiple vacuums over the duration of the detail. Pet hair/debris will be removed as much as possible within the allowance of time.
Interior panels receive a spray down of an All purpose cleaner that is diluted to a safe and effective ratio. All panels receive a literal scrub down with a durable, soft bristle brush. A soft terry cloth is then used to wipe away residual cleaner, once more compressed air is used to bring out excess dirty cleaner from within the seams of the panels, buttons, handles, etc. Vinyl/leather seats are cleaned using the same method, real leather upholstery receives a leather cleaner and conditioner lotion. Headliners and seatbelts are also inspected, and cleaned accordingly. Some areas/materials can be sensitive, using too much of a product, or too much pressure can cause discoloration, watermarks, scuffs, etc. I am professional and take my work seriously. I use my best judgement when working with property that belongs to others. If I feel something may be damaged or ruined due to a product, method, etc. I will leave said area/item as is.
3. After all interior panels have been scrubbed clean and all upholstery/carpets have been fully vacuumed an extractor machine is used to shampoo the upholstery/carpets. The extractor machine is a dual vacuum machine that features heated water and a 6 gallon tank. A range of cleaners are used in this process dependent on soil level. A general cleaner is used in conjunction with a Oxy based cleaner. An enzyme cleaner is available for protein based stains, such as urine, milk, blood. After all has been extracted and as much water as possible pulled out the drying process can commence. This may be the most important part of a detail, ensuring proper dry time is crucial for a successful detail. If a vehicle fails to fully dry it can mold, completely wasting efforts and even possibly making it worse than before. I have compact, high powered fans that are placed within the vehicle to dry the carpets and upholstery.
I do ask that with the interior and full details that the vehicle stay over night to fully dry.
4. Once the interior has had ample time to dry it is time to begin the final stages of the interior detail. Windows are the next thing to be cleaned. Windows are saved for last simply because they repeatedly get dirty during the detail process. Windows may need to be cleaned twice depending on soil level. The interior panels will receive a quick wipe down to remove residual extractor cleaner that has dried onto them. All chrome/clear plastic/piano black surfaces are wiped with soft cloth to remove residual all purpose cleaner. Carpets are checked for any light debris that may have settled or been pulled up by extractor machine, if any found it will be quickly vacuumed. Finally, after all is checked and up to my expectation the vehicle will be complete and ready! Feel free to ask questions, I do plan to make another post similar to this one that highlights the Exterior detail and finally the Full detail. Thank you!
