Participation in school meals decreased across New York State in the 2022โ€“2023 school year, according to a new report [ https://frac.org/research/resource-library/reach-report-2024 ] released by the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC): https://frac.org/ . This drop in school meal participation in New York aligns with trends observed in states across the country. Still, the report notes a striking exception: States that funded and implemented state-level policies sustaining universal free school meals saw increases in participation.

Through CACFPโ€™s At-Risk Afterschool Snack/Supper component, eligible afterschool programs can serve healthy meals and snacks after school, on weekends, and during holiday breaks throughout the school year. While many schools already serve afterschool snacks through NSLP, CACFP provides an opportunity to provide greater nutrition for students and 4x the reimbursement for schools when providing a complete meal.

To be eligible for CACFP, the afterschool program must be located within the attendance area of a school where 50% or more of the students qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. Visit AfterschoolMealsNY.org: https://hungersolutionsny.org/federal-nutrition-programs/cacfp/afterschool-meal-program/ to learn more about eligibility and how to apply. It is well documented that a well-balanced, nutritious diet can have a positive impact on health outcomes. However, eating healthier is more expensive than purchasing less nutrient-dense, more highly processed foods. For those battling chronic medical conditions while trying to make ends meet, the cost of healthier food presents a barrier on the path toward improved health. Food As Medicine strives to remove that barrier, so patients can focus on wellness.

In early March, more than 150 friends and supporters of the Food Bank joined us as we 'topped off' our new facility in Orange County. Guests had a chance to sign the beam and watch along as it was put into place. For several years, our existing Orange County facility has been too small to accommodate the need in that region, so this new facility will be a huge step forward for the Food Bank and our ability to serve our 400 partners and nearly 200,000 neighbors in need throughout the Hudson Valley. We are incredibly grateful to all the supporters making this project possible. In the coming weeks, we will launch a Capital Campaign, inviting donors to help close any final funding gaps.

The Food Bankโ€™s Strategic Plan charges us to provide equitable and sufficient access to healthy, nutritious, and culturally responsive food throughout our 23-county service area, regardless of whether someone resides around the corner or in a remote, rural community. To reach this goal, we are investing in innovative, collaborative strategies that will best meet the needs of each community.

With funding provided by Feeding America and Feeding New York Stateโ€™s Boundless Collaboration project, the Food Bank has secured a refrigerated, ramp-accessible trailer that will serve as a centralized drop and distribution site so agencies in rural Otsego County can have consistent access to perishable foods like dairy and fresh produce for their distributions. The trailer is the first of its kind in the nation.

Maggie Johnson, Director of the Community Cupboard of Edmeston, where the Hub is located, stated, โ€œWe are so excited to bring this service to our area. Because we are located so far from the Food Bank in Latham, having consistent access to fresh product is an ongoing challenge. The Hub allows us to become a perishable food storage and distribution point for local food pantries, especially those without larger storage capacities, which gives them access to this nutritious food on a more regular basis.โ€

presented by Culinary Nutrition Collaborative

We are thrilled to announce that early bird registration is NOW OPEN for the 7th Annual Culinary Nutrition Conference!

This conference serves as a bridge between nutrition science and culinary arts, empowering dietitians and health professionals to translate their nutrition expertise into real life practice in the kitchen for more impactful education.

As dietitians, most of us donโ€™t receive culinary nutrition training as part of our dietetic education, but itโ€™s never too late to learn or improve your skills!

Enhancing your knowledge and skills in the area of culinary nutrition opens up a wide variety of opportunities and allows you to:
โ€ข Stay on top of the latest research and trends
โ€ข Lead cooking demos or classes with confidence
โ€ข Help patients adapt recipes to suit their dietary needs and cultural preferences
โ€ข Work with your favorite brands through recipe development, blog posts, special events and more!

Not to mention bringing back fun and enthusiasm into your work!

I'M IN! https://www.culinarynutritioncollaborative.com/7th-annual-culinary-nutrition-conference

โ€ข There is overwhelming evidence demonstrating the impact of food and diet on health, specifically among food-related diseases. Whether or not a poor diet can cause damage to the body should no longer be debated, as evidence supports the potential causal relationships between dietary factors and diet-related diseases such as ischemic heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. While diet has the potential to cause disease, it is also capable of building, maintaining, and restoring health. The report, written in conjunction with the Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center, aims to bridge the gap between traditional medicine and the use of food as medicine in the prevention and treatment of disease.
