Diffusing Essential Oils

The aroma travels through the nose to the olfactory system. This system processes the molecules along the olfactory nerve to the limbic system, the oldest part of the brain. In the amygdala (emotional powerhouse) and the hippocampus (center for learning and storing memory), responses are triggered that link the scent with memories and experiences. By smelling essential oil, the brain is creating and/or recalling memories and experiences tied to scent.

Because of these reactions in the brain, essential oils have a particularly powerful effect when used aromatically. Due to the volatility of essential oils, aromatic use of essential oils is one of the most effective application methods—the oil user can experience the benefits of a scent quickly and conveniently.

In addition to processing the scent in the brain, as the essential oils are inhaled, they are also absorbed through the respiratory tract and lungs, and then circulated through the blood stream. As we breathe in the scent of an essential oil, it triggers specific reactions physiological and emotional reactions based on our own individual needs and overall health. This is why aromatic use is such a big part of mood management and wellness.

Did you know Essential Oils can be used for Labor and Birth?

It is good to begin using oils early in the pregnancy. This will allow you to become familiar with your favorite EOs. Always dilute with a carrier oil when using topically and try out the blend on your skin prior to labor in case you have any sort of reaction. (Check with a Certified Aromatherapist prior to using any essential oils during pregnancy).

Some birthing centers now allow diffusers in your room. However some people have aversions to strong scents while in labor. Therefore, using an EO Inhaler allows only you to enjoy the benefits of the aromatherapy!

BELOW ARE THE BLENDS I SUGGEST (always check with your OBGYN prior to use of EO's).

Valor: Spruce, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, Rosewood, Balsam Fir. This blend promotes confidence and courage. It will help if you begin to experience all of the hormonal emotions during birth. This is a great blend for back labor also. Massage over your heart or use the inhaler – in between contractions – breathe deep. As often as you need to.

Lavender: incredibly relaxing and calming! Have your partner rub it on your lower back as a back massage to promote relaxation and relieve muscle tension.

Copaiba & Idaho Balsam Fir: This is helpful for tense or sore muscles. Have your partner massage into your shoulders, low back or feet. The largest pore in our body is under the big toe. The oil will absorb into your system quickly when applied there.

Jasmine & Clary Sage: These oils encourage stimulation of the uterus and can help bring on or strengthen contractions. These are a very powerful oils and should be used carefully. You can massage into acupressure points for labor. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR USE PRIOR TO 40 WEEKS OF PREGNANCY.

Peppermint, Bergamot Mint, Green Mandarin, Cardamom: Inhale if you feel nauseous. Also, the Peppermint will give you a burst of energy if you need it. Inhale as often as needed.

Orange & Geranium: PAIN RELIEF. These are the go-to oils for decreasing pain in labor. Roll on inner ankles and low back throughout labor or when your pain intensifies.

BALANCING BLEND:
Spruce, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, Rosewood, Balsam fir. Massage over your heart.

PAIN RELIEF BLEND:
Copaiba, Lavender, Geranium: Roll on inner ankles and lower back

CALMING BLEND:
Lavender, Frankincense, Eucalyptus. Roll on wrists or over heart

ENERGIZING BLEND:
Lemon and Peppermint. Roll on back of the neck and the bottoms of feet. This can be used for labor and delivery, as well as after the baby is born for a pick me up!

BALANCING BLEND:
Spruce, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, Rosewood, Balsam fir. Massage over your heart.
