Based on several sources we believe that local Methodists formed the first church in Albemarle. Even though we do not know what the first building looked like, below is a brief and amusing description found in the May 21, 1925 edition of the Albemarle Press.

“The Methodist was the first church organized in Albemarle. The first structure was built before the Civil War and was in use after the war. It was situated just behind Mr. Sid Austin’s house which faced backwards at that time. A six-foot man could have touched the ceiling and youngsters often jumped from the second story. It was always left open, permitting sheep to run up and down the stairs and pigs to inhabit it. This first little church was used until it almost fell.”

The white church building, shown in the second picture, was completed in 1882. It replaced the original church building. Construction on the current church building, at right, was begun in 1908 and it was completed in early 1913.

Beloved, this morning I visited Raymond. He has some health issues that will require him to have a procedure and then he will need time to heal. Because of this, I (Pastor David) am asking you to NOT call him directly. He needs to focus on healing at this point. Please direct your love, support and prayers to Janet or the children. Thank you for your understanding.
