Rodey Law Firm recently received the Felipe Quintana Memorial Award of Excellence in special recognition of Charles Hughson, Kip Purcell, and Edward Ricco.

The Felipe Quintana Memorial Award of Excellence is awarded in memory of Felipe Quintana, the Volunteer Attorney Program (VAP) legal secretary for 26 years who was dedicated to the advocacy of helping low-income New Mexicans receive pro bono civil legal services.

Samantha M. Hults and Randy Taylor were elected to the Board of Directors of the Rodey Law Firm effective February 1, 2023.

Ms. Hults is a member of the Litigation Department with an emphasis on employment law, labor law and litigation. Mr. Taylor is a member of the Litigation Department concentrating primarily with the Product and General Liability Practice Group.

The purpose of the Distinguished Achievement Awards Dinner is to celebrate notable accomplishments and dedicated service by lawyers and others in the legal community to the UNM School of Law, the New Mexico legal community and the greater community inside and outside of New Mexico. Ms. Vanzi’s tireless service as an advocate, a judge, and a volunteer exemplifies the qualities and impact honored by this award.

March is International Women’s Month and Rodey Law Firm would like to publicly acknowledge the strength, loyalty, dedication, and determination of the women attorneys and staff who work vigorously within our community.
At Rodey, we consider our diversity efforts critical to the level of service that we provide to our clients. We also recognize that a commitment to diversity requires sustained attention and effort. Achieving and supporting diversity is an ongoing endeavor, one that we have made a priority.
Today, and throughout this month, we wish to especially celebrate the powerful women who we have the honor of working with every day.

Ms. Miller returns to the Rodey Law Firm as Of Counsel in the Albuquerque office. Ms. Miller was previously a member of the Rodey Law Firm from 2000 to 2009. She practices in the Professional Liability Section of the Litigation Department with an emphasis on medical malpractice and professional liability defense. Her professional liability defense includes physicians, medical professionals, medical facilities, nursing homes, attorneys, and professionals involved in real estate transactions, particularly New Mexico brokers.

Her general liability practice focuses on complex personal injury, products liability, wrongful death, traumatic brain injury, premises liability, premises security, medical transportation, and work related accidents. In 2014, she tried a seven-week case involving four decedents and four catastrophically injured persons in the California Superior Court: County of San Diego, resulting in a verdict identified as one of the Top 100 Verdicts by Verdict Search. She has tried eighteen cases to verdict, fourteen of which were to a jury.

Her practice has also included the defense of construction defect defense of master planners, developers, and general contractors with a significant focus on common interest association cases including breach of fiduciary duty claims and defense of real estate professionals.

Ms. Miller is licensed in New Mexico and California. Ms. Miller is an attorney instructor for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.

Ms. Samantha M. Hults is an attorney in the Albuquerque office. She practices in the Litigation Department with an emphasis on employment law, labor law and litigation. She has significant jury and non-jury trial experience, as well as administrative hearings. Ms. Hults has presented oral argument in the New Mexico Supreme Court and the New Mexico Court of Appeals. She also has extensive experience in resolving claims through alternative dispute resolution including mediation and arbitration. A former Deputy City Attorney with the City of Albuquerque, Ms. Hults is familiar with local government regulations, ordinances and is also versed in the Family and Medical Leave Act, Title VII, the New Mexico Human Rights Act, the National Labor Relations Act, the New Mexico State Public Employment Bargaining Act (PEBA III) and other Federal, State and local employment and labor laws.

Before joining the firm, Ms. Hults served as the Deputy City Attorney for the City of Albuquerque, where she managed the day-to-day operations of the City legal department, counseled elected officials on complex legal matters, and drafted and implemented various policy and legislation.

Ms. Hults was awarded UNM Association of Public Interest Law Grant in the summer of 2004. She was awarded the Hispanic National Bar Moot Court Competition, second place in the spring of 2004, and was a recipient of the Peggy Browning Legal Fellowship in the summer of 2003.

Kateri Garcia West is an Associate in the Albuquerque office. She is a member of the Litigation Department, and her practice focuses on Health Law, Products Liability, and General Liability.

While attending the University of New Mexico School of Law, Ms. West gained a variety of valuable experiences. She practiced social justice advocacy as a W.K. Kellogg Child and Family Justice Advocate and coached high school students in a regional moot court competition as a 2019 Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Fellow. Ms. West then developed oral and written advocacy skills by competing on the American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition moot court team. She also served as a teaching assistant, a research assistant, and the student representative to the Curriculum Committee. Upon graduation, Ms. West received the Ann C. Scales Jurisprudence Award for her “demonstrated commitment to moving the law forward in the service of humanity” through innovative legal work with the Moms of Law student group, which she co-founded.

Prior to law school, Ms. West started her career as a mechanical engineer and spent a decade in medical sales for several Fortune 500 companies in local and national roles. Her volunteer work as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children in the foster care system led her to law school.
