What is Childhood Apraxia of Speech?

From Apraxia Kids "Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder that first becomes apparent as a young child is learning speech. For reasons not yet fully understood, children with apraxia of speech have great difficulty planning and producing the precise, highly refined and specific series of movements of the tongue, lips, jaw and palate that are necessary for intelligible speech."

One way I think about Apraxia is that the brain says one thing and the mouth does another.

Happy 20th SRWB! It’s also my third year as a member of this incredible network of strong, business-minded, philanthropic women.

Last night we met the recipients of this year’s scholarships. To hear them speak made me want to be better. These young women are our future and the future looks bright. Congratulations to all of these talented ladies.

April is World Autism Awareness Month. According to the CDC, the prevalence of Autism is 1 in 36. Please learn more about Autism, and how you can support friends or family who are Autistic or who are raising an Autistic little one. Teach your children to reach out to their Autistic peers and invite them to a small play date (just the two of them) or to a birthday party. Encourage them to learn more about their friend's reality and to learn what life is like from their perspective. I find that Autistic children are quite insightful and honest to the core. Our Autistic friends want to be involved and accepted. Let's make this the norm!

I just learned that March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. I often think about what the future holds for all the little ones I have seen over the years. They all have incredibly sweet personalities, a strong work ethic and some serious grit. All qualities that make the strongest employees.

Happy International Women's Day....I chose this photo because this woman exudes the confidence, strength and determination that we as women deserve to feel every single day. To my friends and colleagues who are business owners, to the teachers, nurses and ladies who run the tech world, to all the stay at home moms who work SO hard to keep their worlds moving, to mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, and more. We are so many things and together we are strong, brave and fierce. Strong women encouraged me to be and do more and better and to grow. Now, I am a proud business owner. It's my hope, that some day I can give back and support young women in this same way. Enjoy the day ladies, it belongs to you!

This week, new CDC guidelines for early child development were released. Not a single speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist or physical therapist was consulted. Melanie Potock shared this wonderful post showing how these new “milestones” differ from how typical feeding skills actually develop. For those who don’t know, Melanie is a leading expert in feeding therapy.

Please, if a pediatrician tells you to wait and see, particularly if their decision is based on these guidelines, don’t. Reach out to any SLP, PT, OT and ask questions. Be an advocate for your child, you are their voice❤️

Shine had a graduate last week! I'm giving my little friend a huge shout-out for working so diligently on one of the most difficult sounds...and he rocked it!!

Actually, I ❤ many little someone's with Sensory Processing Disorder. One young lady, my niece Leiah, has sensory processing disorder. Leiah is as sweet as can be, insightful, witty , funny and incredibly smart. She is 12 and has had a long road with language and learning difficulties, learning how to calm her body and give it the input it needs, and
fits in school because the stress of it all was (and still can be) too much for her to manage. To top it off, Leiah was 8 before she finally got the diagnosis and my sister got some answers. If your child is struggling like this and you haven't found answers, please contact an occupational therapist or developmental pediatrician for an appointment.
