Here are my comments for photographers I posted to another closed FB group who are thinking about an expeditionary photography trip to Antarctica:

Antarctica was ABSOLUTELY MAGICAL! My wife and I commented later that our 7 days in Antarctica were better than our 30-day trip to 5 countries in southern Africa for my first retirement in 2013! We highly recommend the fly-and-cruise packages which are doubly more expensive ($5~$20K per person to cruise versus $10K~$40K to fly r/t, which does NOT include your travel to South America), but it saves you 8 days of crossing the Drake Passage on a ship from Chile or Argentina just to reach the 7th Continent.

The wildlife is AMAZING with the penguins, seals, whales, and birds--but photographing the shapes and colors of the random icebergs, giant glaciers, and snow-capped mountain ranges in the right lighting conditions on the "white continent" was a photographer's paradise! Just be sure to bring the right filters for the environment...unless you are shooting with your cell phone like most tourists.

Our 8-day Classic Antarctica Air-Cruise package with Antarctica 21 via Punta Arenas, Chile using BAE-146 (100 PAX) chartered 4-engine jet aircraft to Frei Airstrip on King George Island where you embark directly from the plane to the ship via zodiac boats with ALL 20 kg / 44 Lb. total weight allowance (80% of which for me was camera gear as my "carry-on luggage" on my back in the attached photo) was exciting from start to finish!

Our expedition company Antarctica 21 (separate from our travel booking company which was not good and not recommended) operates 3 different ships seasonally in Antarctica, but whatever expedition company you chose, be sure to only book passage on an expedition ship that carries less than 70 passengers (like our ship the Ocean Nova which is older but has some ice-breaking capabilities) because international treaties limit landings to only 100 at a time--and that includes the expeditionary team landing tourists in multiple zodiac boats.

We chose the warmest week of the year historically which is the first week of February (and our weather was the BEST our expedition leader Hadleigh had ever seen in his multiple seasons) but you can go +/- a couple months from that period. Temperatures hovered right around freezing, but with the occasional 50KT winds the wind chill was considerably COLD--even though they recorded a record high for Antarctica of 65F 200 miles East of our position on our last day.

The only thing "different" I would do if I went back to Antarctica would be to use my expensive Nikon D850 more when safe to do so on the zodiac boats. I used my older cropped frame D5100 when transitioning from the expeditionary ship to the landings, and I missed taking great shots of the faceted icebergs and the penguins swimming next to the zodiac which fly up out of the water at low level and high speeds.

Keep in mind, EVERY ANTARCTICA EXPEDITION IS DIFFERENT! The weather changes constantly, so even the expedition team does not know in advance what the weather conditions or itinerary will be--plus we had no weather radar and relied upon the "expertise" of the expedition team/crew to predict the local weather based on satellite and research station reporting. For example, I had my "goal" of landing at the "Penguin Post Office" run by the UK at Port Lockroy--but we went on the opposite side of the Lemaire Channel to the Ukrainian Vernadsky Research Base which had the southernmost bar and post office! Flexibility of the expeditionary team was phenomenal--but it also changes (and sometimes challenges) your photography conditions hourly or by the minute.

Bottom Line: If you can afford to go to Antarctica, you will NOT be disappointed at the AMAZING nature photography opportunities! GO--DO IT!

Hi! I'm Jeff at JSJ Photography. I'm a retired military member and adventure photographer who has been taking pictures and entering them in photo contests as my wife Jenny and I traveled the world together for over 25 years. We lived on 3 continents and have traveled to all 7 continents (including Antarctica) by age 50 , so I have tried to capture God's amazing creation wherever we live and travel. I have focused on Bald Eagle photography for the past 7 years since I retired by photographing them in the Washington, DC area along the Potomac River and Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River along the Maryland/Delaware border. We also support the Honor Flight non-profit organization dedicated to transporting as many United States military veterans as possible to see the memorials of the respective war they fought in Washington, DC, at no cost to the veterans.

During our world travels as a geography major and photo enthusiast, I have developed a fascination with various cultures--but I also like to feature photos of nature, landscapes and weather phenomena. My favorite compositions include sunsets/sunrises, the moon, thunderstorms, bald eagles, unusual animals, rare birds and other wildlife. I usually keep to subjects that do not include humans, but I enjoy photographing man-made objects--especially military aircraft, patriotic flags, aviation, transportation, lighthouses, bridges, architecture, skyscraper buildings, skylines and other historic artifacts. Sometimes I make a few "technical" photos in black & white or selective colors. I usually process my photos to match the real world--realism is important to me as a photographer, so I hope visitors to my galleries see the same moment in time as when I took the picture.

We lived in Hawaii for four years, but we enjoyed the best sunsets and sunrises on Navarre Beach along Northwest Florida's Emerald Coast even more than Hawaii. During our time in Florida, JSJ Photography earned over 130 "Approver's Choice Awards" for my photo art as featured in the Photo Galleries of Weather Underground. My photos were also featured by hurricane expert Dr. Jeff Masters during his analysis of Hurricane Isaac in August 2012, and my photos have been selected six times as "World View Photos of the Week" in the top ten photos of the world. I took on a major photography project in 2011-2013 by getting outside to shoot a series of sunset or sunrise photos every day on Navarre Beach, chronicling an entire year of 366 note-worthy landscape photos which I had made into a computer wallpaper software program that changes daily. Contact me directly for details on the 366 Sunrise/Sunset Wallpaper DVD if you would like to purchase one for $10.00 +S&H.

My awards include nature photos with several varieties of herons, bald eagles, pelicans, black skimmers, cedar waxwings, sandpipers, double-breasted cormorants, Muscovy ducks, turkey vultures, hummingbirds, woodpeckers and osprey. Other wild sea animals include dolphins, sea turtles, jellyfish and manta rays. I like to shoot flowers and small insects such as butterflies, dragonflies, walking sticks, bees and damselflies. My zoo and African safari animals include a baby silverback gorilla, lion cub, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, coatimundi, chimpanzee, zebra, giraffe, lion, leopard, water buffalo, tiger and black bear.

My weather photography includes several lightning, tropical storm and hurricane series which have been recognized with both Approver's Choice and World View selections. My aviation photography includes the Air Force Thunderbirds, Navy Blue Angels, AC-130 gunships, CV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, B-25 Mitchell from the Doolittle Tokyo Raid and the B-17 Flying Fortress.

As a graduate student in geography, my goal was to visit all seven continents and all 50 states in America by age 50, but due to the COVID pandemic I only made it to all 7 continents. I've been to 32 countries and over 400 cities, along with visits to 41 of the 50 states as of August 2020--including climbing Mount Fuji, Japan in 2005 and Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania in 2013. My expedition to 5 countries in Africa in 2013 for my retirement and to Antarctica in early 2020 accumulated over 50,000 photos--of which I have only processed and posted a small fraction.

I shoot with Nikon D850 full-frame and D5100 cropped-frame cameras with Nikon 16-35mm (F4) wide angle, 24-120mm (F4) mid-range, and 250-500mm (F5.6) zoom lenses with 1.7x and 2x teleconverters. I also shoot with a GoPRO 5 and a DJI Mavic Pro drone each with 4K digital cameras. With the encouragement of my wife Jenny, locals of Florida's Emerald Coast and the world-wide audience of Weather Underground, I opened my first small business, JSJ Photography, in October 2012. I hope you enjoy your visit to my Fine Art America galleries and I look forward to hearing from you if you have any questions.
