Good afternoon everyone, one hot topic that has been overlooked by those in the medical/healthcare field is atlanto axial instability. In Greek mythology the character of the atlas was charged with carrying the world on his shoulders. The ancient Greeks took the name further and decided to call the first vertebrae of the neck the atlas. The reasoning is that the atlas carries the head on his shoulders. The atlas is also one of the most important vertebrae in the whole body as you will learn shortly. The second vertebrae in the neck is called the axis. The reason being is that its the axis of rotation of your upper cervical (neck). The importance of these two vertebrae is that two important ligaments rely on them being healthy. They are called the alar and accessory ligaments. If either of these ligaments are damaged the atlas and axis will be compromised and so will your overall health. Symptoms of upper neck injuries include but are not limited to: Inability to hold up the head for an extended period of time, Upper neck pain near the skull, Referred pain to the shoulders, Head feels heavy ,Tightness or stiffness in neck muscles, Tenderness, Headaches, Shaking or unstable feeling in neck/head,Dizziness/imbalance, etc If you are having any of these symptoms or have been to every specialist you can think of and a smoking gun cannot be discovered then its time to consider a digital motion x-ray (DMX). Here is a video of a patient with “Atlanto axial instability” or AAI. As you see when he is turning his neck to the side the first vertebrae slides over the second.
