We are saddened to learn of the passing of our first Archivist, Tom Wilsted. Tom led the Archives from 1979-1990. Sending prayers and condolences to his family and friends. Here is Tom in the Archives with the manuscript collections.

The Salvation Army has been involved with correctional services for over a hundred years, we were among the first groups to minister to women inmates as well.

The War Cry of June 5, 1920 features a story about Sergeant Major Lewis Pertain, who was saved by a testimony of Commissioner George Scott Railton. Railton had just arrived in the US in March of 1880, and Pertain soon joined The Salvation Army.
