In Honor of Tally Tripp

As many of you might have heard already, Tally Tripp, died yesterday, December 6, 2023, in Alexandria, VA. Tally, with her family, Mark, Olivia, and Camille, had been fighting cancer for many months, and it came as a shock for everyone when her condition worsened. She was surrounded by her family and two close friends. Mark stated, "We all told Tally what she had given to our lives and let her know that we loved her dearly. In the end it was a beautiful, peaceful passing, though no less heartbreaking."

When details are provided for the service to honor and celebrate Tally, we will pass along the information.

Tally was a student in the GW Art Therapy Program in one of the first cohorts (MA 1978-1981). She was taught by some of the field's founders and pioneers including Elinor Ulman, Bernard Levy, Hana Kwiatkowska, and Edith Kramer. She remained connected to GW throughout the years as a Clinical Field Instructor (1981-1986), Staff Counselor and Art Therapist at the GW University Counseling Center (1987-1990), Adjunct Professor (1992-2005), and then as full-time Faculty (2005-2021), and GW Art Therapy Clinic Director (2008-2021).

Tally loved teaching and interacting with students, sharing her expertise with clients healing from complicated trauma. She also took students to South Africa as part of the study abroad program, training them how to integrate art therapy into other cultures.

Tally was an integral part of our art therapy faculty team and we greatly missed her energy, positivity, warmth, and smile when she retired. We will now miss her presence and spirit in this world.

I have included some photos of Tally throughout the years.
Please feel free to post your own photo memories of Tally in the Comments section.

Our Story

Since the dawn of human consciousness, people have created art to communicate personal and universal concepts. Art therapy as a profession combines art making with psychological concepts in order to access an individual or group's internal resources that can then aid in healing the mind and body, and even the community. The graduate program in art therapy, established at The George Washington University in 1971, was one of the first to be developed in the United States and to receive approval from the American Art Therapy Association.

Our philosophy has been influenced by the teachings of the founders of art therapy who have been associated with the development of our program—Edith Kramer, Hanna Yaxa Kwiatkowska, Bernard Levy and Elinor Ulman. We believe the art therapist's unique competence lies in the capacity to use art therapeutically, to offer people the experience of making art and the opportunity to gain the insights that may come through this kind of endeavor. While the art therapist works in varied settings and serves a myriad of populations, we believe that art therapy must maintain a firm base in the visual arts. The expressive use of drawing, painting and sculpture is the heart of the Art Therapy program at GW.
