Happy Mother’s Day to all of the human AND dog moms out there ❤️
As the weather gets nicer everyone will be out more with their dogs. So lets talk about why I am not a huge fan of neightborhood strolls.
🦮 you are rarely able to set your dog up for success - distance is your dogs best friend when they are reactive, socializing to something new or just unsure about a person/dog/object. In most neighborhoods you simply cannot make the space your dog needs to feel confident and comfortable about their environment.
🦮 these walks aren’t doing what you think they are doing - a stroll around the block is often very understimulating and provides little actual physical exercise for your dog.
🦮 there are just better options 🤷🏼♀️
Playtimes, interactive games and high quality sniff walks are always going to do more for your dog than a simple walk around the block. Once or twice a week make some time to put them in the car, drive them to a nearby park, field, even an empty parking lot and let them sniff, explore and enjoy their walk stress-free! 🐾
🍼Maternity Leave Update🍼
🐾 As of May 1st 2024 I am no longer taking new daytraining or field trip clients until after my leave.
🐾 Private sessions will remain open throughout the remainder of May and some of June. Please contact me here for more information or to get scheduled: https://www.torostraining.com/contact-8
🐾 In the meantime, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions you may have! I would love to continue helping people to find other trainers in their area, give enrichment ideas or answer general questions you may have about training throughout my maternity leave!
I plan to return back to normal scheduling in late 2024/early 2025! 🦮🐶🐾

Got to meet Leroy yesterday 🥰 such a cutie! ❤️
The weather is beautiful…get your dogs out! ☀️🍃
Here is a fun tip for toy loving dogs.
👉 dog toys aren’t just meant to lay around the house. Take your dogs favorite type of toy and use it when your out on your walks! GAME CHANGER for reactive dogs or off-leash training.
🎾 have a fetch lover? Get squeaky tennis balls. The sound will grab their attention and the ball will keep it!
🐾 Does your dog love tug? Take a long rope toy or tug with you to engage with them throughout your outing.
🐿️ Have a dog who loves to chase wildlife? Flirt poles can be excellent tools to get and hold your dog’s attention.
Got to spend some time with this cutie yesterday 🥰❤️🐾

When I am out with my own dogs or my day training/field trip dogs my #1 concern is their safety…more often than not the top thing that puts them at risk are untrained off leash dogs.
Here are some tips on how to handle these interactions:
🐾 Carry pet corrector or an airhorn to scare off approaching dogs or dogs that have approached (and to help break up a fight in the event you need to)
🐾 Be loud! If you see a dog coming towards you and the owner does not have verbal control stomp, yell, clap etc…do what you have to do to try and scare the dog from coming closer.
🐾 Your dogs safety always comes before the other owners feelings. Be stern in your request for them to recall and leash their dogs.
🐾 In the case the dog makes it to you try and keep your dog behind you, while using your body to block the other dog from making contact with your own. If this is not safe to do, give your dog as much slack on their leash as possible and try to avoid pulling, tugging etc which can create more pressure and lead to more stress.
Forever my favorite lazy day hack on nice days! 🐕
If you don’t have a fenced yard you can still do this on a tie-out or long leash!
This definitely does not replace exercise - Jedi (the german shepherd) will tell you that he MUCH preferred his long game of fetch today…but it is a great way to burn a little mental energy when you don’t have a ton of time (and you want your dogs tired so you can peacefully watch the Grammys tonight 😜) 🐾❤️
How often does your dog need walked? 🦮Well, that depends on a few factors.
🐾 The quality of the walk. High quality sniff walks in low stress environments do way more for your dog than a stroll around the block and may have longer lasting positive effects.
🐾 Have you created an athlete? Dogs need an equal amount of time spent being stimulated as they do being taught and put into routines that help them have an off switch. In other words, they should be able to relax without 4 hour a day runs. If they can’t, you may have a harder time cutting down on walks…and may need to do some training to improve their ability to have downtime.
🐾 Do you have a yard or alternative means for adequate exercise? With the availability of sniffspots, rental yards and training classes many dogs can cut back on walks because they are getting stimulation through alternative activities. If you do have a yard utilize it for playtimes, training, sniff activities etc.!
🐾 Puzzle toys and indoor enrichment can be great for freezing days, rainy days and sick days but should not replace proper exercise, socialization outings and sniff adventures! They should be used in combination with these things.
🐕🐩 Nothing can replace a hike or long sniff walk with your dog. Make sure you are making time weekly for these activities regardless of the age or breed of your pup! 🐩🐕
Happy pup! ❤️
