In celebration of Women’s History Month, Beyondid is shining a weekly spotlight on some of history’s most inspirational women in technology. Today, our fifth and final feature will recognize the career and achievements of Dr. Ellen Ochoa.
Unlike many of her peers, Ochoa didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming an astronaut. Her interest in space research developed as she studied optics in her undergraduate program. It quickly became clear that Ellen had an incredible niche talent for optical engineering. This newfound passion drove Ellen to complete master's and doctorate degrees at Stanford University’s School of Engineering.
Post-doctorate, Ellen wasted no time co-inventing patents for optical technology which enabled computers to draw conclusions about the objects they “see”. In 1988 Ellen was accepted into NASA’s astronaut program; by 1991 she had become an astronaut, and in 1993 she was the first Hispanic woman to travel to space. This trip was one of four successful missions she would complete during her career as an astronaut.
Today Ellen Ochoa is most well-known for the final phase of her impressive 30-year career with NASA, in which she served a five-year term as the organization’s first Hispanic and second female director of the Johnson Space Center before retiring in 2018.
With such an impactful career behind her, Ellen is a shining example for women and girls around the world. As we wrap up a month of recognizing some of the coolest women in technology, remember that women’s ambitions – their careers, lives, and collective history – continue beyond Women’s History Month.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, Beyondid is shining a spotlight on a few of history’s most inspirational women in technology. Today we dive into the life of brilliant inventor and actress Hedy LaMarr.
At the start of World War Two, Jewish-born Hedy LaMarr felt that her marriage to arms dealer and N**i sympathizer Fritz Mandl had become unbearable. So, in 1937 she fled her Vienna residence in the cover of night and sailed toward new beginnings in America. Also on that ship was Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer co-founder Louis B. Mayer. By the time she reached New York, Hedy had talked her way into an MGM acting contract. Her beauty, wit, and charm took Hedy far in Hollywood. But Hedy never left her passion for science. Hedy turned her trailer into a laboratory where she conducted experiments and worked on inventions between filming. It’s in this make-shift lab that Hedy invented the frequency-hopping technology that laid the groundwork for modern-day Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
Her invention allowed allied torpedoes to evade detection by N**i forces, giving allied forces an immediate leg-up in the ongoing war. Unfortunately, Hedy’s scientific achievements were little mentioned in 1940s media. Tabloids instead chose to focus on Hedy’s physical beauty and role in films like Dishonored Lady (1947), and Samson and Delilah (1949). Additionally, Hedy never received any money for her work on frequency-hopping technology.
There is no doubt that Hedy led an incredible acting career, but her true legacy is in the world of technology. As the future of this industry, it’s up to us to recognize the brilliant women in our field and champion their successes. So this Women’s History Month, we not only remember Hedy LaMarr as a talented actress, but as our "Mother of Wi-Fi".
BeyondID wishes a peaceful and happy Ramadan to all in observance! May you find an abundance of joy, community, and growth in this period of fasting.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day from Beyondid! As the Irish say:
“Wherever you go and whatever you do,
may the luck of the Irish be there with you!”
In celebration of Women’s History Month, BeyondID is shining a weekly spotlight on some of history’s most inspirational women in technology. Today’s spotlight focuses on the incredible life and tragic death of Kalpana Chawla.
In 1965, for the first time, a three-year-old Kalpana Chawla observed a sole airplane crossing the sky in her hometown of Karnal, India. At this moment in history, Kalpana’s new and growing desire to take flight was an unlikely reality for the young Indian girl. Today we know Kalpana Chawla as a NASA astronaut and the first Indian-born woman in space.
Kalpana began her academic career at Punjab Engineering College, earning a degree in aeronautical engineering. After immigrating to the United States for higher education and increased opportunities for women, Kalpana obtained her master’s degree from the University of Texas and, finally, her doctorate from the University of Colorado.
Despite years of heavy skepticism from peers and mentors, Kalpana began a career with NASA in 1988, the same year she completed her education. By 1997 Kalpana had become the first Indian-born woman in space and was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
Sadly, her life and career were cut short during her second mission to space. On February 1, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia broke apart upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. In the first deadly mission since the explosion of the Challenger in 1986, all seven astronauts aboard the Columbia were killed. Kalpana was just 40 years old.
Though devastating and premature, Kalpana’s death did not end her legacy. Her story of determination and perseverance as a minority woman in technology lives on in the spirit of women and girls around the world who chase their dreams knowing that no matter how unlikely, they are within reach.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, Beyondid is shining a weekly spotlight on some of history’s most inspirational women in technology. Today we’re talking about Marian Croak.
Marian Croak has been thinking about Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) longer than most of us. That’s because, before COVID-19 prompted the widespread adoption of VoIP-powered platforms like ZOOM, Marian invented it. VoIP is the solution for internet-based audio and video communication, and in 2022, its importance landed Marian a spot in the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
VoIP aside, Marian holds over 200 patents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is the current VP of Engineering at Google. In a world run by virtual meetings, Marian’s innovations represent a great victory for gender equality and for women in technology around the world.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Beyondid is shining a weekly spotlight on some of history’s most inspirational women in technology. Today, we’re taking a look at the incredible life and achievements of Sister Mary Kenneth Keller.
Sister Mary...wasn’t like other nuns. That’s because -- after taking her vows with the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1940 – Keller went on to become the first woman in the nation to earn a Ph.D. in computer science.
Following the historic completion of her Ph.D. at UW Madison in 1965, Keller founded Clark University’s computer science department. Much like at UW Madison and DePaul University before, Keller led with a deeply-held belief in equal computing access for everyone.
Today Sister Mary Kenneth Keller’s bold contribution to computer science and women in technology lives on through Clark University’s Keller Computer Center, the Mary Kenneth Keller Computer Science Scholarship, and the Wisconsin Computing Idea.
When Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971, federal holidays became tied to specific Mondays rather than numerical dates. The purpose was to create more guaranteed three-day weekends for our workforce.
So on this third Monday of February, we not only celebrate Presidents’ Day, but the commitment to support and improve work/life balance for all American workers. In this spirit, BeyondID wishes everyone a relaxing long weekend and, of course, a Happy Presidents’ Day!
Beyondid Delivery Manager Sneh has been an integral part of our team in India since 2019. Find out what he has to say about the company culture and Raving Fan philosophy at BeyondID.
