Weekend (and Thursday) safety reminders! If you or a friend needs assistance, do not hesitate to call. Campus Police along with .ems are on duty to assist YOU!

08/29/2024

The mission of the Muhlenberg Department of Campus Safety and Police is to promote and maintain a safe, inclusive, and welcoming campus environment as they serve and protect the College community. To fulfill that mission, the department adheres to its core values of integrity, accountability, and service.
The department announces the implementation of their Body Worn Camera (BWC) program as part of the ongoing commitment to its mission and core values. Following guidelines established by the Department of Justice, research into BWCs and benchmarking of like institutions began in September of 2022. At the conclusion of this process, Campus Safety acquired Getac BWCs for every uniformed officer in the department. The Department of Campus Safety then conducted product testing to establish appropriate criteria for use of BWCs and officers were trained in their use guided by the policy that was developed in conjunction with College counsel.
The use of BWCs is a best practice by police departments across the nation and the research has proven that their use provides transparency and accountability, and that it contributes to de-escalation of heightened encounters. BWCs also have been shown to support professionalism and build greater community trust.
Campus Safety has initiated a testing period to pilot the BWCs and expects to implement this new safety feature fully within the next several weeks. The BWCs will be activated by officers during calls for service, and Campus Police Officers will inform individuals that the encounter is being audio and visually recorded. A red light will be displayed on the camera when in use. Casual student interactions will not be recorded.

A big shout out to Investigator Koury for putting some much needed decals on our ATV! These decals allow us to be easily identified when patrolling campus. The ATV also lets officers easily get around campus and get in places where patrol cars aren’t able to access! πŸš”
