The immune system - Lymphatic system

The immune system is a complex network of organs, cells and proteins that defends the body against infection, whilst protecting the body’s own cells.
The immune system keeps a record of every germ (microbe) it has ever defeated so it can recognise and destroy the microbe quickly if it enters the body again.

The lymphatic system is a network of delicate tubes throughout the body. The main roles of the lymphatic system are to:

- manage the fluid levels in the body
react to bacteria
- deal with cancer cells
- deal with cell products that otherwise would result in disease or disorders
- absorb some of the fats in our diet from the intestine.

The lymphatic system is made up of:

> lymph nodes (also called lymph glands) – which trap microbes
> lymph vessels – tubes that carry lymph, the colourless fluid that bathes your body's tissues and contains infection-fighting white blood cells
> white blood cells (lymphocytes).

Any abnormalities of the immune system can lead to allergic diseases, immunodeficiencies and autoimmune disorders.

How can Lymphatic drainage helps with edema caused by lipedema .

Lipedema is a chronic condition characterized by the abnormal growth of fat cells in the legs, thighs, and buttocks, leading to swelling and discomfort. It's often accompanied by impaired lymphatic system, which worsens symptoms.

Lymphatic drainage techniques can help alleviate lipedema symptoms by:

1. Reducing swelling
2. Improving circulation
3. Enhancing removal of toxins and excess fluids
4. Relieving pain and discomfort

Some effective lymphatic drainage techniques for lipedema include:

1. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD): Gentle, light-touch massage
2. Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT): Combines MLD, compression, and exercises
3. Lymphatic pump techniques: Enhances lymph flow using gentle, rhythmic movements
4. Compression garments and bandaging: Supports lymph flow and reduces swelling

It's essential to work with a trained therapist or healthcare professional to develop a personalized lymphatic drainage plan for managing lipedema.

Triple negative cancer refers to a type of breast cancer that tests negative for three specific receptors:

1. Estrogen receptors (ER)
2. Progesterone receptors (PR)
3. Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)

This means that the cancer cells do not have these receptors, which are typically targeted in hormone therapies and other treatments. Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) tends to be more aggressive and difficult to treat than other types of breast cancer.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is diagnosed most often in and is deadliest for young Black women, with cases also being higher among Hispanic women ¹. TNBC is an inherited condition that significantly increases the likelihood of developing breast and ovarian cancer during a person's lifetime ². There are many resources available for those with TNBC, including the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine DNA sequencing study ².

Treatment options for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) typically involve a combination of:

1. Surgery: Lumpectomy or mastectomy
2. Chemotherapy: To shrink the tumor and reduce the risk of recurrence
3. Radiation therapy: To kill remaining cancer cells
4. Immunotherapy: To boost the immune system's ability to fight cancer
5. Targeted therapy: To attack specific cancer cells

Some specific treatments for TNBC include:

1. Anthracycline-based chemotherapy
2. Platinum-based chemotherapy
3. Taxane-based chemotherapy
4. PARP inhibitors (for BRCA1/2 mutation carriers)
5. Immunotherapy drugs like pembrolizumab and atezolizumab
6. Clinical trials: Exploring new treatments and combinations

It's essential to work with a healthcare team to determine the best treatment plan, as TNBC can be aggressive and require individualized approaches.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, it's essential to work closely with a healthcare team to develop a personalized treatment plan.

Red light therapy (photobiomodulation)

Red light therapy is very beneficial reducing inflammation. Higher energy translates into healthier cells with improved anti-inflammatory and self-healing capabilities.

Studies have demonstrated that red light therapy significantly lowers inflammatory markers.

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), an inflammatory protein overproduced in many autoimmune diseases. Was shown to have decreased by 30% in one study.

Its scientifically proven results are even endorsed by research in the Journal of Autoimmune Brilliance, Cellular Dynamics Quarterly, and the Photon Wellness Chronicle!

If you´ve been looking for a relatively affordable healing method that can not only help you address autoimmune diseases, inflammation, and oxidative stress, Red Light Therapy is by far one of the best healing protocols you can follow and afford.

Staying well-hydrated helps to maintain the body's essential functions, including blood circulation, nutrient transport, and waste elimination. When the body is dehydrated, these processes can become compromised, potentially exacerbating pain sensations.

With temperatures reaching record highs this summer, hydration is more important than ever for pain relief, joint health and flushing out toxins.

Symptoms that may indicate a medical condition after cancer surgery.

Pay particular attention to symptoms that get worse over time. If you notice the following symptoms, ask your doctor if you might have lymphedema.

This condition is chronic and progressive, and getting an early diagnosis can make a significant difference in your quality of life.

Early intervention matters in cancer patients with lymph nodes removed to reduce the progression of and find out the causes of the swelling.

Lymphedema.

After you have had a cancer related surgery and some of your lymph nodes have been removed it is important to know the symptoms of lymphedema and track them so the doctors can identify the cause of your swelling and put you on a path to managing your condition.

Your veins keep blood circulating throughout your body. Normally, blood flow to your limbs is controlled by one-way valves that help propel your blood back to your heart. Sometimes these valves stop functioning, allowing blood to pool in the legs, which can progress to a condition called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). If not treated, CVI often causes lymphedema, which leads to swelling and skin changes.

Take a look at the lymphatics system on our body.
The lymphatic system is part of your immune system. It is a network of tissues, organs and vessels that help to maintain the body’s fluid balance & protect it from pathogens, without it neither the circulatory system nor the immune system would function properly.

The lymphatic system produces and releases lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) and other immune cells.

It drains fluid (called lymph) that has leaked from the blood vessels into the tissues and empties it back into the bloodstream via the lymph nodes.

The main roles of the lymphatic system include:

-managing the fluid levels in the body.
-reacting to bacteria.
-dealing with cancer cells.
-dealing with cell products that otherwise would result in disease or disorders.
-absorbing some of the fats in our diet from the intestine.

Filarial lymphedema case of a patient that was bitten by a mosquito in Vietnam more than 20 years ago.

According the National Library of Medicine NHI “Lymphatic filariasis, transmitted by mosquitoes is the commonest cause of lymphedema in endemic countries. Among 120 million infected people in 83 countries, up to 16 million have lymphedema.

Microfilariae ingested by mosquitoes grow into infective larvae. These larvae entering humans after infected mosquito bites grow in the lymphatics to adult worms that cause damage to lymphatics resulting in dilatation of lymph vessels. Once established, this damage was thought to be irreversible. This lymphatic damage predisposes to bacterial infection that causes recurrent acute attacks of dermato-lymphangio-adenitis in the affected limbs. Bacteria, mainly streptococci gain entry into the lymphatics through 'entry lesions' in skin, like interdigital fungal infections, injuries, eczema or similar causes that disrupt integrity of skin.

Attacks of dermato-lymphangio-adenitis aggravates lymphatic damage causing lymphedema, which gets worse with repeated acute attacks.

Elephantiasis is a late manifestation of lymphatic filariasis, which apart from limbs may involve genitalia or breasts.

Studies have found lymphatic drainage benefits by improving lymphatic function and reducing tissue inflammation including: ‌Rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines, lupus, MS, and other autoimmune disorders. This has the effect of stimulating lymphatic vessels, mobilising fluid and inflammatory cells from from inflamed tissues.
