For over 90 years, the Altoona Area Public Library has been serving our community.
The Altoona Area Public Library provides library services to the residents of the Altoona Area School District in order to meet their educational, informational, and recreational needs. In addition the library is the District Library Center for libraries in Blair, Bedford and Huntingdon Counties. In that capacity it provides interlibrary loan, reference, public relations and advisory services for the benefit of all residents of the three county area.

Marvelous Machines

Introducing a brand new STEM program for students in grades 2 through 5! Join us every month as we explore a different simple machine and the many ways we use them in our daily lives. Up this month, the inclined plane! We'll learn how this machine helps us move things along before constructing our own marble runs.

NEW PROGRAM - Preschool Explorers
Children Ages 3-6
The Altoona Area Public Library is now offering a new, fun and educational preschool program for children age 3 – 6. Preschool Explorers will kick off the Fall 2024 sessions the week of September 8th with classes being offered on Tuesday morning at 10:30am or Thursday morning at 10:30am.
This program is ideal for families who are seeking a way to introduce a more structured literacy based program for their children as they begin to transition into a preschool setting.
Programs will incorporate literacy development, socialization, creativity and imagination as emphasized in the PA Learning Standards for Early Childhood Education. Simple concepts like taking turns, cooperation, sequencing, prediction, rhyming, phonics and many more will be introduced during the program.

We Like Bikes Storytime

Summer may be on its way out, but biking never goes out of style! Make sure you are road ready by joining us at the AAPL for a special storytime. We will hear stories involving bikes, learn and review some bike safety, and design our dream bicycles!
Children who are pre-registered for this event may request a FREE bike helmet courtesy of the Conemaugh Miners Medical Center!

Food Through the Ages

Join us and sample Food Through the Ages! Experience a historical presentation on our food topic for the month. Samples and recipes will be given out at the end of the program for all to enjoy!
This month's topic is the Tudor Dynasty's Strawberry Tarts.

Storytime signups are NOW open! Join us for Storytime at the AAPL this school year! We offer three versions of Storytime, each geared towards a different age group:
Mother Goose on the Loose is a unique one-on-one lap-sit program for children 12 - 24 months and caregiver. Choose from Mondays or Thursdays at 9:30am.
Toddler Time is a special music and movement story time for children ages 2 and 3 years old and caregiver. Choose from Tuesdays at 9:30am or Wednesdays at 9:30am or 10:30am.
And NEW for this year - Preschool Explorers is an exciting preschool story time program for children ages 3 - 6 years old plus caregiver. Choose from Tuesdays or Thursdays at 10:30am. Thanks to WTAJ for spreading the word that we are collecting donations of canned goods and single serve non-perishable food items for Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown through September 20th.
Items needed include: canned goods (especially tuna), granola bars, single serve packages of crackers, cup-o-soup, peanut butter and Chef Boyardee canned items with pull tabs.
Donations may be dropped off at either the library Adult Circulation desk or the Youth Room desk.

Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library are hosting their next book club on Saturday, September 14th at 10:00am in the library Board Room. The book for September is "The Island of Sea Women" by Lisa See. You can check out a copy of the book at the library.

PAINT SPACE

We still have a few spots available for Paint Space! This program is for teens & adults. Cost is $10 for materials. Must register and prepay by August 21st.
We will watch a “how-to-paint” YouTube video. A facilitator is available to offer advice, encouragement, color mixes, and technique. All skill levels are welcome! At the end of the class, you will leave with your painting.
