It's been so much fun to hear from patients about their race experiences, goals met, PRs made and discuss what we need to do going forward to keep them on track towards their next running endeavor. CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who completed the IMT Des Moines Marathon or half marathon on the 16th. Very proud of all of you!

This college student came to see us this week for chronic ankle sprains. She is fearful of rolling her ankle again and is especially hesitant to wear high-heel shoes, which she loves.

She’s not wrong to be hesitant because, after all, the number one predictor of an ankle sprain IS a previous ankle sprain.

Fortunately, there are often functional things we can identify to work towards prevention of future ankle sprains.

For her, we noticed a reoccurring pattern of AVOIDING push-off through the big toe when walking and AVOIDING stabilizing through the big toe with standing activities. In the videos, you can see how she walks on the outside of her foot and lets her big toes “jump” all around with exercise.

Pushing-off THROUGH the big toe during gait is necessary to transition the foot to a rigid lever that is strong and stable for push-off. On the contrary, when we avoid the big toe and live on the outside of the foot, we put our foot in a position that is unstable and more susceptible to ankle sprains.

We can’t wait to see her progress as she learns how to create foot and ankle stability through use of her big toes, improves the strength of her feet and ankles, and transitions to a gait where her foot acts like a rigid lever for push-off that is strong, stable and greatly decreases her risk for future ankle sprains!

Last week, I had the opportunity to meet with members of the Iowa State Running Club and learn about their upcoming hosted race event, the Cross Campus Classic 5K.

On October 15th, they will be welcoming students, families and alumni for a 5K run around campus to raise money for YSS, specifically to buy youth running shoes.

They would love to have a good turnout for their first annual race event! You can sign up or donate by using the QR codes or the links here:

Don't miss Home Team Physical Therapy's Hip Mobility Workshop this Thursday! $10 to join and can be paid at the time of the workshop.

Photos from Ames Performance Physical Therapy's post 09/08/2022

"Hip tightness" is a common complaint I hear about from gym-goers and patients. Typically, when I ask people what they've tried to address hip tightness, they say "a variety of stretches". That can be a start, but there are often better ways to address hip tightness than just stretching and I can't wait to share some of that knowledge with you this month through a Hip Mobility Workshop. Offered at two different times and locations SportsIowa Indoor Sports, Ames, IA and Athletic Club of Ames. No need to RSVP, just show up!

08/25/2022

When patients come to me with “multiple issues” it’s often helpful to take a step back and consider the body system as a whole rather than focusing on one painful area.

With guidance in movement & mobility, pain education and management and movement confidence we can set people up for pain-free success in whatever athletic endeavors they choose!

Fall marathons are coming up (who has IMT Des Moines Marathon or half marathon on their calendar?! 🙋‍♀️) and as training mileages increase, unfortunately so do running-related injuries. Did you know that most running-related injuries are OKAY to run through with a little training plan modification and guidance on pain management? One common running-related injury I have been seeing more of in clinic these past few weeks is Iliotibial Band Syndrome. Let's manage it now so it does not interfere with you on race day! https://hometeamwr.com/blog/iliotibial-band-syndrome
