I’m actually impressed

Back to the 70's with this picture of the Racing Beat RX-3 in action. Jim Mederer is behind the wheel in his customary plaid button-up shirt, piloting his RX-3 creation during the 1977 NHRA season. From the looks on the faces in the crowd, this might be their first time experiencing a rotary engine drag launch!

Foto Friday! The RB archives are a fun place to spend an afternoon and many of these images have never been seen publicly before. Scanned from an original 35mm slide, this IMSA GTU RX-7 still looks stunning almost 45 years later.

Throwback Thursday. Great image of the Racing Beat IMSA RX-7 GTU from the 1980 season. After 500 miles the #7 RX-7 driven by Walt Bohren and Jeff Kline finished 11th overall and second in the GTU class behind the Electromotive Datsun 280ZX driven by Don Devendorf.

We recently uncovered a blast from our 80’s past during our trip to the Japanese Classic Car Show when we spotted this twin-engine Honda CRX sitting off the the side. Way back in 1984, Car and Driver Magazine and Racing Beat’s Jim Mederer had teamed up to create this Honda CRX that featured twin engines, dual synchronization, AWD drive, leading and trailing suspensions, a pair of automatic transaxles, and a wacky and fun desire to make it all work. Why? Why not! After following the rumor trail of this car’s whereabouts for many years we discovered it was purchased in Florida by now-owner Randy Carlson and brought back to California. Looking pretty good for an almost 40 year old one-off project, Randy hopes to get this piece of Racing Beat history fine-tuned and running again. Sorry Randy, there is no shop manual for this one, you’re on your own!

Another stunning day for the Japanese Classic Car Show! Old school overload with cars to overwhelm your senses and to send you home drooling. Great to hear the build stories of the Mazda owners and listen to the humbling appreciation they give to RB. Days like this remind us of just how special it is to be part of the Mazda car culture. Thank you.

Great to get back outside this past weekend at the Japanese Classic Car Show!

If you've owned a Racing Beat rotary header, Miata exhaust component or RB sway bar over the past four decades then it's likely passed through the skilled hands of John Rue of Phoenix Engineering. Sadly John recently passed away leaving a void in both our business and personal relationships. His tremendous tube bending skill, hard-working devotion, passion and warm-spirit will be sorely missed. The business was left in extremely capable hands of his sons Chad (left) and Austin (right), we look forward to what the future brings! Thanks John, you will be forever missed.
