BREAKING: The UN’s International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion today declaring that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal under international law. ⁣

The court also ruled that Israel systematically discriminates against Palestinians and that its occupation is de facto annexation. It also ruled that Israel has abused its status as the occupying power in the West Bank and East Jerusalem by annexing territory, imposing permanent control, and building settlements.

CAIR-LA Calls on Federal Officials To Investigate Violent Attacks on Protesters Opposing the Sale of Illegally Occupied Palestinian Land 07/10/2024

CAIR-LA called on federal officials to ensure a fair and transparent investigation into the recent violence that broke out during a protest opposing a real estate marketing event hosted by an organization that has reportedly promoted the sale of illegally occupied Palestinian land. CAIR-LA also called on officials to ensure that the investigation addresses the violent attacks against pro-Palestinian demonstrators by pro-Israel counter-protesters.

Local organizations condemn hate, as attacks against LGBTQ+, Jewish and Muslim communities rise 07/08/2024

“We know that hate crimes and hate incidents targeting our communities are underreported, and these numbers do not fully capture the extent of Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian hate our community faces,” said CAIR-LA legal director Amr Shabaik, in a statement. “The report clearly shows that much more work needs to be done to address hate against vulnerable communities in California, starting with the commitment from our elected officials to the safety and well-being of their Muslim, Palestinian and Arab constituents.”

CAIR-LA recently sent a letter to L.A. City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto and Assistant City Attorney Arturo Martinez urging them not to file criminal charges against the more than 200 peaceful student, faculty, alumni, and community protesters who were arrested at UCLA on May 2.

The individuals arrested were participating in UCLA’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment to protest the university’s investment in weapons manufacturers and other entities that are directly arming Israel’s military and enabling further death and destruction in Gaza and the other Palestinian territories.

Recently, 269 members of Congress—including at least 23 representatives from California—voted in favor of an amendment that would bar the State Department from using the Gaza Health Ministry’s data on the death toll and enable the U.S. to further become complicit in Israel's genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza.

CAIR-CA today expressed deep concern and opposition to recent initiatives taken by California State legislators that deliberately ignore the suffering of the Palestinian people under the Israeli government's indiscriminate attacks.

While both ACR 119 and the letter from the Jewish Caucus rightfully condemn terrorism and antisemitism and call for the return of civilian hostages, both notably omit how the Israeli government's ongoing violence and indiscriminate bombing in Gaza has killed over 22,000 Palestinian civilians and caused a life-threatening humanitarian crisis. Additionally, both contain claims that have been proven inaccurate and have been used to dehumanize Palestinians and justify the unfolding genocide and war crimes against them.

CAIR-CA asserts that selective actions or statements made by a legislative body of representatives regarding the suffering of only Israeli civilians that ignore or justify the suffering of Palestinians who have experienced an egregious humanitarian crisis, dispossession, occupation, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, and daily abuse and murder—not only over the last three months but over the past 75 years—are irresponsible, morally wrong, exacerbate Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian hate, and is in direct conflict with lawmakers' commitments to irrevocably condemn all forms of violence.
