Sadly I share that my friend and AHS classmate Randy Breese passed away July 3, 2024 so I am sharing his obituary from DesMoinesRegister.com. Randy was a kind person & a Boy Scout who had a wonderful memory of our Ankeny School years. While preparing for our most recent AHS Class Reunion Randy shared his keen knowledge of what songs and artists were popular during each of our school years. Randy really enjoyed attending that Class Reunion and catching up. Randy had joined the army and served in the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. We will miss Randy and his smiling face. Rest In Peace Randy!
Randy Neil Breese, age 71, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on July 3, 2024 at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born on October 15, 1952, to Edward Charles Breese and Catherine May Winn.
Randy is preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents Forest and Merle Winn, and George and Henrietta Breese, his niece Tami Lea Nelson, and his great-nephew Ian Paul Frisk. He is survived by three siblings, Douglas Edward Breese (Scottsdale, AZ), Lee Allen Breese (Ankeny, IA), and Lynn Dianne Breese (Gilbert, AZ). Randy will also be fondly remembered and deeply missed by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Randy grew up on Kenworthy Drive in Ankeny, Iowa, was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and a proud alumnus of Ankeny High School, Class of 1970. He cherished his childhood memories at his grandparents' farm in Buck Grove, enjoying the fields and farm life.
Randy attended DMACC before joining the Army where he served at the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. He later spent many joyful hours fishing at Big Creek Lake with his brothers and nephews, playing board games with friends and family, sharing his unique life perspective with others, and bringing laughter and joy to all of his beloved niblings.
Randy's independent spirit, sense of humor, and love for his family and friends will be remembered by all who knew him. Randy was interred in a private ceremony at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa on July 25, 2024.

Happy Birthday to another classmate and great friend Craig Griffieon shown with more hair in 1994 in the field and carrying the Flag in a parade and enjoying eating at a Hog Roast with his wonderful wife LaVon! He too joined Karen and I and our group for that Wild and Wonderful Canoe Trip lead by our dearly departed now Steve Higgins!
Happiest Birthday today to my dear longtime AHS classmate and Friend Karen Cross (Kelling) who as you can see we know each others secrets- Ha Ha! In 6th grade we went to Drake University and made it into the July 10, 1964 DM Tribune as Aerospace Experts and we got to meet Neil Armstrong! Then in 1969 we traveled across Europe with the Foreign Study League wearing our mini skirts and buying wigs with Tammy, Karen, Rhonda, Liz, Claudia and me and our leader Max Akers and those guys from Roosevelt! Just think of all the adventures we now-Grandmothers have experienced - including our class trip to Montana with dear Steve Higgins leading us into the WILD canoe Trip!! Celebrating You today on your Birthday Karen Kelling Cross!
Interesting Read in Thursday February 16, 2023 DMRegister article describing the planned growth of Ankeny, Johnston, Grimes, Polk City & Elkhart Iowa....Ankeny now has about 70,000 population & is projected to have 118,688 people by 2050 = must be a popular place to live!! And some of us remember little Ankeny before it even had a McDonald's and we knew everyone in our school....
See where Des Moines metro's northern suburbs of Ankeny, Johnston, Grimes plan for growth From the east side of Ankeny to Johnston spreading to the northwest, see how these suburbs are planning for growth.
Someone is having a worse day than us...This am I found this Pick-Up at the end of my driveway who apparently went off the road & did a complete circle barely missing a big tree and 2 DOT stakes in the ground - before walking off (see footprints) & abandoning his truck!! This was NOT here last night at 5pm. Yesterday we had another snow storm closing Ankeny & Most central Iowa Schools and even the Ankeny Senior Center with High Winds & Low Temps causing snow to drift over the payer of ice from previous day's RAIN! I also saw 2 more pick-ups abandoned off the NE 36th Street I-35 Ankeny Exit so PLEASE use caution when driving or walking as WINTER is still alive & Kicking - especially Pick-Up Trucks!! Stay SAFE and WARM!!
