Drs. Mindi and Paul Dayton had a great day at the Seniors on the Move Annual Conference today. They presented on “How to Keep Your Feet Healthy and Happy” and had the opportunity to share information on Lapiplasty 3D Bunion Correction to the over 200 attendees. This is a fantastic organization for seniors looking to remain active and educated and continue to live life to its fullest.

This patient had unfortunately had previous bunion surgery elsewhere that failed to truly realign the bones and also created excessive trauma to the big toe joint, resulting in big toe joint arthritis. We were able to straighten the toes and resolve the arthritis pain with Big Toe Joint Fusions. MTP fusions for the WIN!!

This patient suffered from a painful bunion deformity with an associated problem called Metatarsus Adductus (MTA). This means that the bones behind the 2nd and 3rd toes, the 2nd and 3rd metatarsals, are also deviated inward in a pathologic position. When this deformity is present it must be corrected in order to successfully correct the bunion. Without correcting the MTA first, the bunion deformity has a significantly greater risk of recurring (coming back) because the bones can't really be lined up in the right anatomic position. In this case we were able to realign the entire midfooot to normal anatomic position, correct the bunion successfully at the unstable joint, and significantly narrow the foot.

The exciting thing is that with our technique and patented plating system, the recovery is not any different than "just correcting the bunion", but we are able to give the patient the best chance for a long lasting correction. This patient was protected weightbearing in a boot at 4 days, with transition to shoes around 6 weeks.

Part of our team took yesterday afternoon away from clinic to spend time volunteering in the community. We put in some manual labor pulling weeds and helping to beautify the healing and butterfly gardens at On With Life, a wonderful brain injury rehabilitation center in our community. It felt good to get some fresh air, get our hands dirty, and help to maintain this wonderful healing space for patients and their families. 💜

We also learned who has the green thumbs in the group! 🪴😃 What a fun way to spend time as a team and share our time supporting others doing amazing things in our community.

Dr. Kaldenberg-Leppert recently led the Foot and Ankle Center of Iowa team in Fit Feet Screenings for the Special Olympics Iowa athletes.
