Great work, everyone!
That is a tiny baby! Two pound deliveries are scary - especially when they happen at home.
But Clara there is healthy because of a paramedic who has been wearing his inspiration on his wrist for years. It's inspiration born out of tragedy.
Laura Terrell KCCI shares the great baby save that was successful because of a story that started with bad news. It's one of the stories we're sharing in a new This is Iowa special focused on bad news that leads to good second chapters.

With sadness we learned of former paramedic instructor Chris Petrick’s passing. Thank you, Chris, for sharing your time here on earth with our students so they may touch the lives of others. You were truly a servant’s servant. Godspeed.
Only 10 days after earning her paramedic certification! Congrats to Emma, and her crew at Altoona Fire Department. Additionally, great job to the program lab instructors who teach on their days off from their own departments to prepare students for these moments!
Altoona first responders describe delivering baby on Interstate 80 Just months after graduating from Des Moines Area Community College's paramedic program, Emma Kolb helped deliver a baby on the shoulder of I-80!
Great job to these two DMACC grads!
Congratulations to Rachael and Conlen on becoming new paramedics! Today is the first day of their comprehensive field training program. The program is designed to help our new paramedics become more comfortable running calls at the ALS level.
Earlier this semester, Clive Fire Chief (Ret.), Rick Roe spoke to the class about understanding retirement systems.
When considering employment options, new paramedics must consider retirement benefits but few truly understand them.
As a recent retiree, and as a former employee of a large pension manegement company, he was perfect for this message. Thanks Rick Roe!

While on clinical ride time with the Urbandale Fire Department, paramedic student Tyler Pedersen responded with crews to a residential structure fire. When firefighters brought an unresponsive cat out of the building, Tyler stimulated the cat to breathe, applied high-flow oxygen, and administered a bolus dose of love and compassion. After several minutes the cat started to whine and before crews left the cat was up and moving around in the arms of its grateful owner.
Great work, Tyler!

It’s so cool to see our people take exciting next steps in their careers. Firefighter/Paramedic (DMACC 2020 Grad) Tanner TJ Townes and his wife Emily are headed to Kentucky where he will serve as a firefighter/paramedic with the Owensboro Fire Department. TJ served the metro since 2018 with various organizations. What we are most grateful for, however, is he decided to come back to DMACC as an instructor after he got his feet under himself in the field. A well-rounded public servant, Owensboro is fortunate to have his family headed their way. DMACC EMS wishes the Townes family all the best, and we hope TJ will keep us posted on the great things he is sure to accomplish in this next phase of his career!

Thank you to Justin Grodinsky, PhD and Jonna Berry, PhD (not pictured) who are Criminalists with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation for speaking to paramedic students about novel psychoactive substances (NPS)that are appearing in the counterfeit perception medications plaguing the country.
Did you know, according to the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education, cases of counterfeit benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety medications in the same class as Xanax) outpaced opiates 4:1 in the U.S. in 2021? (Source: https://www.cfsre.org/nps-discovery/trend-reports)
