Today, our Brothers continued a chapter tradition by welcoming students on their first day of school. It was a privilege to join our VP, Bro. Jamar Turner, at his school, Marley Elementary, to help give a warm welcome and try to reduce first-day jitters. The kids kept asking him how he could have so many “brothers”.

AACPS Mentors: Celebrating the Champions of Change
On Thursday, June 20, 2024, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) held a celebration that highlighted the positive impact of the one- on-one mentors and various mentoring programs that were facilitated by numerous community partners. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Eta Eta Lambda Chapter was one of those community partners. The celebration took place at The Board of Education, Board Room and was coordinated by Bro. Andre Dillard, who is the Senior Manager of Mentorship Programs, for AACPS. Bro. Dillard oversees all things mentoring for the school system. Bro. Dr. Mark Bedell, who is the Superintendent for the school system also brought greetings and discussed the importance of mentorship in AACPS. During the celebrations all the one-on -one mentors, and community partners were acknowledged and presented with a thank you gift bag. The highlight of the event was a video presentation of the mentees talking about the positive impact that their mentors and the various mentoring programs have had on them. There was also a parent who discussed how her son has taken a 180 degree turn for the better because of the mentoring program that he attended every Wednesday during the school year.
Eta Eta Lambda’s Alpha Academy Mentoring Program (AAMP) has been working with young men from AACPS for close to 20 years. AAMP services students from all of Anne Arundel County who are in grades 3-12. Bro. Stephen Williams is the current chairmen for AAMP. In addition to coordinating for the monthly, Saturday sessions, that take place at Annapolis Middle School, Bro. Williams has established a very successful mentoring program at Arundel High School and for the 2024-2025 school year will be leading the charge for a mentoring program at Annapolis High School. The Arundel and Annapolis High school’s programs will be supported by the chapter brothers and coordination with Bro. Dillard and the AACPS Office of Equity.
Several brothers were able to attend the event and spent some time talking with other organizations and mentors. It was a well-attended event that served as the segway into the 2024-2025 school year and Bro. Dillard’s goals for AACPS mentorship initiative for the upcoming school year.
On Saturday, June 15, 2024, the City of Annapolis, Maryland, extended a special honor to the Men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and the Eta Eta Lambda Chapter through the honorary naming of Franklin Street between Church Circle and Cathedral Street, Alpha Phi Alpha Way.
The street naming serves as a lasting tribute to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and the Eta Eta Lambda Chapter’s enduring impact. We see this as an honor to the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated across this nation and around the world. And while it is an honor, we also receive it as a reminder and a clarion call to continue service and change making, which was imbued to us through the example of our Jewels. We are thankful to the city of Annapolis, Mayor Buckley, Alderwoman Finlayson and the entire City Council for this recognition. We appreciate and are looking forward to continued and consistent partnership with our community to inspire change through relentless service.

The gift of fatherhood might best be found in seizing the opportunity to share, to mold, to guide, to counsel, to nurture, to support, and to love. In doing so, the men who seize that opportunity, are making a willing and conscious investment to shape the outcome of our future through sacrifice, courage, and determination.
Today, we celebrate the men who have embraced the responsibility of showing up for their children as champions, confidants, examples, and perhaps most crucially as Dad.
Happy Father's Day to every father and father figure. A special Father’s Day shout-out goes to the fathers who are brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, and the amazing fathers in our chapter.
