joins the Nation in celebrating LGBTQ during the month of June. This year’s theme, , speaks to the challenges of the past two years to celebrate Pride Month as a community.
This month, USNA re-commits to the development of honor, courage, and commitment in every member of our community, regardless of sexual orientation. We take this opportunity to reflect on the difficulties of the past and continue to grow tomorrow’s best military leaders, from all walks of life.
Major news out this week of a policy change for which many in our community have been waiting—and fighting—a long time. An HIV-positive diagnosis will no longer be considered grounds in and of itself for a service academy midshipman or cadet (or enlisted servicemember) to not commission, nor will it be grounds for limitations to deployability.
What this policy update does not do is remove HIV as a disqualifying factor for accession to the armed forces, and it is not yet clear whether midshipmen and cadets who become HIV-positive prior to signing their two-for-sevens will be retained.
While the policy update does not bring the United States military fully in line with today’s medical reality and with peers like the United Kingdom and Israel, it is nonetheless a step in the right direction that USNAOut cheers.
