There’s no doubt about it - winter is HERE! And with that, in order to limit snow and salt being tracked through the gym, we kindly request that you do not wear your outside shoes inside the gym. For your convenience, cubbies, a shoe tray for wet shoes, and a chair can be found right inside the front door! In the event that you’re unable to bring a change of shoes, please thoroughly dry your shoes off before entering. A roll of paper towels has been left near the door as well. Thank you for doing your part to keep our gym dry and clean!

Lastly and most importantly, everyone with a ATC shirt/hoodie on is a VOLUNTEER please do not yell or cuss at them. If you do,you will be asked to leave immediately. They have worked very hard to put this giveaway on.

We all know protein is important, but how can we tell if what we're buying and eating has a good amount of protein in it, as compared to the calories?
There's a super easy way! It's called the 10:1 ratio. And we'll use Good Culture Cottage Cheese as an example.
Step 1: Determine the grams of protein (in this example, it's 19g)
Step 2: Add a 0 (in this example, 19 becomes 190)
Step 3: Determine the calories (in this example, it's 120)
Step 4: Compare your two numbers - 190g of protein / 120 calories
If the calories are HIGHER than the grams of protein, put the food back! The amount of protein just isn't worth those extra calories
If the grams of protein is HIGHER than the calories, its a great ratio and you'll get a good amount of protein per serving - calories well spent!
Fall is officially here! And especially on a rainy, gloomy day here in Northern Illinois, we are craving some comfort food but trying to stick with our fitness goals!
Give this macro-friendly, high protein, whole 30 approved Bone Broth chicken soup a try! You can make a big batch and freeze for meal prep ease too!
INGREDIENTS
- 8 cups Chicken Bone Broth (Kettle & Fire is our favorite brand!)
- 4 cups water
- 1 pound Chicken Breast
- 1 Sweet Onion, 2 cups celery & 2 cups carrots (all chopped)
- Fresh or dried rosemary and thyme
- Optional - Cauliflower Rice, Orzo pasta, or protein pasta
- Optional - Garlic (minced)
- Optional - potatoes (chopped)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Sauté onion in a little olive oil or avocado oil, then add in carrots, celery and other optional vegetables or potatoes
- After a few minutes, add the rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper to taste, and any optional (dry) rice or pasta
- Pour the bone broth & water into the same pot & place the chicken breast on top
- Cover the pot and let simmer on medium/low heat for about 30 minutes
- After 30 minutes, remove the chicken breast and shred, then add back into the soup and stir well
MACROS (without pasta):
Calories: 198
Protein: 30g
Fat: 2g
Carbs: 15g
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 45 minutes
Total time: 1 hour
Servings: 6

ONE-SKILLET BURBON CHICKEN
521 Cal / 15 Fat / 48 Carb / 40 Protein
INGREDIENTS:
¼ cup lower-sodium soy sauce
¼ cup bourbon
¼ cup unsweetened apple juice
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 ½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1/2-inch-thick strips
1 tablespoon cornstarch, plus 1 teaspoon, divided
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 teaspoons water
3 cups cooked brown rice
Sliced scallions, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
1. Combine soy sauce, bourbon, apple juice, vinegar, maple syrup, garlic, ginger and crushed red pepper in a small bowl.
2. Toss together chicken and 1 tablespoon cornstarch in a large bowl. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken; cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and crispy, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the soy-bourbon mixture; stir to coat. Cook, stirring often, until the sauce has reduced to a syrupy consistency and the chicken is cooked through, 6 to 8 minutes.
3. Combine water and the remaining 1 teaspoon cornstarch in a small bowl; stir to mix well. Add to the pan; cook, stirring often, until the sauce thickens and coats the chicken, 1 to 2 minutes.
4. Divide rice among 4 plates; top with the chicken and sauce. Garnish with scallions, if desired.

These are 2 different protein powders I have in my kitchen, for a side by side comparison. Which one do you think is the better option?
For starters, both of these protein powders advertise 25 grams of protein PER SERVING... which sounds awesome, right? Key word: *SOUNDS* awesome. That's because the marketing tricks you!
With the protein on the left, a serving size is 1 scoop. With the protein on the right, a serving size is 2 scoops!
That means with 1 scoop on the left, vs 2 scoops on the right, its a difference of:
- 110 calories vs 190 😱
- 1g of fat vs 4 😱
- 5mg of cholesterol vs 65 😱
- 3g of carbs vs 19 😱
- 1g of sugar vs 2 😱
Now, the protein on the right does have some added benefits like higher percentages of added vitamins, and lower sodium, but there are ways to get those added vitamins in without the extra calories, fat, cholesterol and carbs!
