Responding to a burglar alarm call in Anthem, Deputy William “Bill” Coleman contacted a subject sleeping in a van near the scene. The subject who slid open the door, pushed out the barrel of an AR-15 assault rifle and started firing. The suspect fired using metal-piercing military-grade ammo. One of the green-tipped .223 caliber rounds slammed into Deputy Coleman just beneath his Kevlar vest. Deputy Coleman never had a chance; he succumbed to multiple wounds.

We are grateful for Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs recognizing the fallen soldier from Apache Junction. The governor’s office has issued a commendation in memory of Sgt. Andrew Southard, who was killed in a training exercise over the Mediterranean Sea on Nov. 10. The governor also ordered flags at the state capitol to fly at half-staff on Saturday, Nov. 25, to coincide with a memorial service for Sgt. Southard.
