If I haven’t made it abundantly clear yet, I LOVE WHAT I DO! In the last two days I’ve given six sessions and it is blowing my mind 🤯

Y’all, I just can’t stop learning. It’s kind of a problem 🤪

I’m here at the Myofascial Release (MFR) seminar on our last day. This is my second time taking it and I’m so glad I did! It has solidified the work for me even more and am super excited to get my hands on my clients to practice these techniques.

I have had profound experiences with MFR and consistently see results with my clients who receive MFR, especially for those recovering from trauma.

If you’re curious about MFR, please reach out to schedule a free 15-minute consultation call with me to see if it’s right for you.

Happy learning!

I had the privilege of once again teaching trauma-informed practice to the massage therapy students at Orange Technical College. Teaching about trauma is a privilege and a joy.

What is trauma-informed practice?

First, we need to address what trauma-informed practice is not.

Trauma-informed practice is not about:

Being an expert in trauma
Not making mistakes
Fixing it

Trauma-informed practice is about:

Being knowledgeable about trauma
Practicing self-compassion and compassion to others
Empowering others

You do not need to be an expert in trauma to be more trauma-informed. Just by learning more about the types of trauma and how trauma affects us all, you will be more trauma-informed.

In our relationships (personal and professional) we will undoubtedly trigger others with our words and actions at some point. That is unavoidable, because we don’t know what other people’s triggers are until we experience it. So the goal isn’t to never trigger someone. We can do our best to not trigger someone, but at some point it will happen. Instead, we focus on practicing compassion and being part of the reparative relationship when someone is triggered by handling it with compassion for them and for ourselves.

Finally, and most importantly, this means having healthy boundaries in order to take care of our needs and empower the other person to state their needs. We don’t try to “fix it”. We empower others to be accountable for their own healing and recognize their own resilience.

At its core, trauma removes a sense of empowerment and agency. In trauma-informed practice, we take a step back from trying to be the expert and empower the client to recognize that they are the expert in their own experience and we walk with them along the way to their healing.

In trauma-informed practice, instead of asking “What’s wrong with you?” we ask “What happened to you?” which removes the sense of shame that is often wrapped up in trauma.

I’m teaching a 4-part series workshop on trauma-informed practice that is geared towards herbalists, but anyone can attend and will learn so much for themselves, their family, their community, and their vocation (even if you’re not in the health field).

Did you know that rest is constructive?

While we rest, there are so many vital functions happening in our minds and bodies. The endocrine system regulates itself (the stress hormone cortisol decreases), the heart rate slows down, muscles repair, the immune system heals infection, inflammation and trauma, the digestive system absorbs nutrients, the brain processes information to make long term memories, and so much more!

We are all very well practiced in being “on”. Our sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight/freeze/fawn) is often activated during times when we can rest.

For many of us, it’s difficult to transition into the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) because we’re conditioned to constantly be “on”.

This is where the power of yoga comes in. Yoga has all these practices built in to assist us in practicing rest and regulating our nervous system.

Asana (movement), pranayama (breath work), dhyana (meditation), and mantra (sound) are all direct paths to access our nervous system.

Resting takes practice, yet we are conditioned to be “productive” at every waking moment and if we’re not producing, we’re “lazy”. I’m here to tell you that rest is vital.

If you need to do some mental gymnastics to challenge the belief that resting is “lazy”, then give yourself permission to rest for the purpose of being able to be more productive later. A burned out nervous system cannot function at full capacity.

I’m consciously making rest a priority.

Thai Massage is an ancient practice that goes so much deeper than simple stretching.

During a Thai massage, I am teaching my clients how to rest by transitioning into their parasympathetic nervous system through breath and awareness.

There is a beautiful attunement that happens in a Thai massage session through rhythmic, intentional movements.

Happy Moonday!

Join me tonight at 6:00pm for Moon Meditation. It’s a New Moon in Ta**us 🌑 Register at naomibourassa.com

I have been engaged in a year long Moon Medicine course with the Florida School of Holistic Living since the Winter Solstice this past December and I’m learning so much! I love passing on fun facts about the Moon 🌚

This Ta**us moon is calling us to enjoy the simple pleasures and get grounded in our bodies and in the Earth. For this New Moon Meditation, we will work on intention setting and take a moment to get grounded in our bodies.

Keep your eye out for our upcoming Moon Meditations since Eclipse season is upon us!

What is eclipse season? Glad you asked!

Did you know that eclipses come in pairs?
There will be a Total Lunar Eclipse on May 26 (when the Earth blocks the light of the sun on a full moon so this happens at night) and a Total Solar Eclipse on June 10th (when the moon blocks the light of the sun on a new moon so this happens during the day).

Eclipses are seen as transformative times, which can cause an upheaval in emotions. While transformation is needed, it can also be overwhelming, so it's important to take care of ourselves during this time to allow the process to happen. Many cultures use the eclipse time to stay indoors and take a moment to reflect.

I plan to hold moon meditation for the Total Lunar Eclipse on May 26, but I will be on vacation during the Total Solar Eclipse so plan accordingly!

Happy Mo(o)nday!!!

Join me tonight at 6:00pm for Moon Meditation. It’s a SUPER Full Moon, or Pink Moon 🌕 (register at naomibourassa.com)

Did you know?
Every day of the week corresponds with a planetary body. Mondays correspond with the moon! So this will be a most auspicious day to have our Moon Meditation.

What sign is the moon in?
The moon is in Scorpio, which is a water sign. Water signs are connected to emotional awareness. We will focus on tapping into our intuition and letting go of anything that is weighing us down emotionally.
