I am not officially working but there are things that need to be done. And since the heat has broken, I decided to find a nice place to enjoy it. There is some reading and some working. I hope you all are enjoying your summer too.

Do you have a child that turned 5 this summer or is turning 5 this fall???

Shepherd of the Valley Preschool has a High Five class designed specifically for this age group. It is 4 mornings a week. The class is run like half day kindergarten used to be. And it is an amazing kindergarten prep class. Your child will be more than ready for elementary school after having experienced this program.

Will you have a 3 year old by September??

Our preschool still has openings for our 2024-25 school year. The three year old class is about learning to be in a classroom with other people. We learn to share space, toys, and attention. We learn to transition from activity to activity. We learn to identify shapes, colors, numbers, and letters. And we start building the foundation to be good at cutting with scissors and writing.

All this is disguised as play. The students have no idea how much they are learning ๐Ÿ˜‰.

I didnโ€™t get a lot of pictures yesterday. Our year came to a close and I was not sure how I was feeling about it. I am sad and I am happy. The kids agreed that it is how they were feeling too. Thank you to the families who were a part of our program. We will miss you but are excited for you to take the next step.

Last week the 4s class had a pet store open. Those animals were so well taken care of. The sensory table was also a huge hit. I agree, those feel really great.

They went to visit their art work at the Art Show before it was taken down.

They were busy making mother's day gifts. Which were a surprise and I did not get a picture.

I loved the work they did on filling people's buckets and the project that came out of that.

Last week the 3s class was so busy. Their letter of the week was W and they studied worms and tried watermelon. The worms were a pretty big hit. Most students held them but they all looked at them. The pretend center was a floral store and a hairdresser. The beauty shop is very popular and I smiled each time as it seemed the girls were always primping the boys. Picking the flowers and making different bouquets was also a big hit.

They worked on mother's day gifts. They had planted sunflowers and decorated bags to give out. They turned out GREAT! This year the sunflowers did so well.

Today the High Fives went on a field trip to Dakota County Parks at Lebanon Hills Visitors Center in Eagan for Insect Investigations. It was really fun. We learned about the different body parts of the insects and a song to remember them. We went to a prairie and swept with nets to capture some insects. We even saw 3 gardener snakes. Then we moved to the forest habitat and got to dig to find some insects. We did not find a lot but we liked looking. On our hike back we saw spider webs, a blue jay followed us back, a bumble bee, another snake, and lots of little bugs. I think it was worth it.

This week the 3 year olds had an "in house" field trip. Dakota County Parks came and did a class about soil. The students learned all sorts of things about what makes up soil. The dug in different places to see what they could find. But the biggest thrill was seeing real worms. They even had a race. Thanks It was a GREAT experience.

Spring is in full swing. The 4s are having a blast camping and learning about bugs and such. They made the coolest bug eye headbands. I love the group pic where they all have them on. They have all become "monkeys" on the playground. The estimation jar is still a hit. The kids both love brining it in and guessing how many are inside.

The High Fives started a unit on Road Construction. They were loving the dress up opportunities. And the black beans with construction vehicles were a big hit in the sensory table. We also started learning about word groups this week. We started with -at words. They did really well and were starting to grasp the concept nicely. We ended the week with a messy project which we all love. We did some relief painting to make traffic cones that contain their names. We even added some road signs to it. I always find it interesting who likes the feeling of getting their hands dirty and who does not.

Please come and stop by SOTV anytime during regular business hours to look at the SOTV Preschool art show. Each classroom submitted a couple of works for display. We added a little something about what the students learn when they do these fun projects. So not only is it pretty cute, it is educational as well.

The 4s class has moved onto Camping. They have been busy making campfire both in art and in the pretend center. There is a camping scene with a tent in the pretend center and it is a HUGE hit. The learned about the letter C and finished with the colors pink and grey. Wednesday last week they all wore pink and grey to school.

There is fishing and looking for bugs and frogs as well. They even made binoculars to go searching for things on their own.

The 3s have been very creative. They learned hot to paint with their wind (blowing through straws). They have been Veterinarians and those animals went ALL over the room. Love of art was made and lots of building with different materials. The classroom was a big mess each time I visited which usually means lots of learning happened. I love how they experiment with toys and incorporate unusual elements like building on the windows. Outside has been pretty nice so we have spent some extra time there. The kids are getting braver than they were and so much climbing!!

The High Fives are finishing their unit on New York and Dinosaurs. We made some puppets and paper plate dinos this week. The kids loved making the dinos their own. I told them we really do NOT know exactly what they look like because we only have bones. So do what you think or would want to see.

This week they were pretty into the puzzles and designing in general. They almost always did the puzzles in a group and the team work was fun to watch. They built more than usual as well. Fun to see where that took them.

The playground has been especially fun. Today (Thursday) was really nice and we found all the place we could jump off. They got progressively higher and it was fun to see them be brave. We took pics so they could see their jump too.

The 4s class were so busy last week. They were finishing up with their trip to Japan. They designed their own kimono and at sticky rice at snack (even on a mat on the floor). They are loving the estimation jar that is taking turns going home with each student. They are continuing to take turn being the Very Special Child of God. Each kid feels so special when they get to share about themselves. And when a grown up comes to class, all the students LOVE it. They also learned about clouds an rainbows. Outside is fun and we have a lot of climbers but we played inside last week and the kids were over the moon. With such a mild winter, we have not used the muscle room a lot and the students LOVE it. The teachers would MUCH rather go outside ๐Ÿ˜‰

Photos from Shepherd of the Valley Preschool's post 04/21/2024

Last week and this week, the High Fives have dinosaurs out. We made masks to turn each student into a dinosaur. In the sensory table, we have fossils to dig out of the sand. The pretend center has a huge amount of dinos to play with. And this group really likes to pretend so the stories they are coming up with are priceless. We did a variety of dinosaur activities including turning the first letter of their last name into a dinosaur. They picked what color they would be, what kind of head, if they had wings, spikes, or both, and what kind of tail.

We are currently studying New York State. The Natural History Muesum there has a large selection of Dinosaur Fossils. We are currently solving mysteries to find out a special Where in the state. There is a picture of us all working together to cross one off the list.

We had our first rainy day in a long time this last week. The kids loved the novelty of playing in the muscle room as we have been able to be outside so much. We even took the scooters out and they thought it was a blast. I also loved the messes we made that day. It is always a good indicator of a lot of play happening.

The last couple of weeks have been pretty busy in 4s. They celebrated Easter and made baskets. They are now traveling to Japan. Lots of building going on. And new purple playdough is a big hit. They had chapel and music class. They were super pumped to get a couple of days in the muscle room (which they seem to prefer to being outside??). They started their new sharing project, The Estimation Jar. We are learning to figure out space and quantity (with numbers up to 100).
