The Cabrillo College Symphonic Winds will be presenting our Spring Program on May 19th at 3 pm in the Crocker Theater,

which pairs standard works of the wind band repertoire with current diverse voices that we so desperately need. Having been awarded a Faculty Grant to support the purchase of new repertoire for the Instrumental ensembles, three of the works we're performing benefited from that support and are authentic representations of the cultures and experiences of composers Omar Thomas, Dwayne Milburn, and Ricardo Lorenz. The Lorenz work is called Caminantes and is written as a tribute to Venezuelan migrants traveling thousands of miles to seek a better life. The Milburn Meditation is a beautiful setting of the famous folk song "Poor Wayfarin' Stranger", and Thomas' Caribana Afterparty is just that.....a celebration of music from diverse Caribbean cultures.

The Cabrillo College Symphonic Orchestra will be performing a program entitled "The Peaceful Spirit" on May 16th at 7:30 pm in Samper Recital Hall.

The program is centered around Ralph Vaughan Williams Symphony No. 3 "Pastoral". It is one of RVW's least performed works, and was written after WWI as an elegy to the lives lost in a world conflict that forever changed humanity. The work features Cabrillo College faculty member, Jordan Best, singing an angelic melody in the final movement. We've paired 3 other works with this program, Adolphus Hailstork's Three Spirituals for Orchestra, Florence Price's Andante Moderato for Strings, and Aaron Copland's "Variations on a Shaker Melody", all three pieces are performed as an ad-hoc suite we're calling the "Freedom Suite." The program seeks to promote peace and freedom in the hearts of our audience.

Dialogues artists' reception and talk
Cabrillo Gallery

We are thrilled to start our new semester with the opening of the exhibition Dialogues today, featuring artwork by Jonathan Parker and Stephanie Robison, on view through March 3.

Parker and Robison share a common visual language, yet each speaks in their own distinctive dialect. These two artists construct their abstract artworks from uncannily related shapes and compositional structures. When placed in proximity, their works start up stimulating, playful conversations, riffing off one another in delightful aesthetic dialogues that echo and reflect each other’s kindred visual vocabularies.

Please stop by the gallery to see the exhibition, and make plans to join us for the reception and artists’ talk on Saturday February 11 from 2-5pm. We are so lucky to have these artists work on view!

Please go to our website www.cabrillo.edu/cabrillo-gallery for more information about Dialogues and the gallery.

Dear friends of Cabrillo Stage,

I am honored to be joining your community as the new Artistic Director of Cabrillo Stage. Whether it’s an unforgettable performance from years ago, a tune that never leaves your head, or the lyrics that remind you you’re not alone, musical theatre has the power to connect and uplift us like nothing else.

I’ve directed musicals in schools all over the Bay Area and I’ve seen how these productions create tightly knit families and theatres that feel like homes. As I get started in my role as Artistic Director, it is my hope that Cabrillo Stage feels like home to all of you: A place you return to over and over again, where you always feel you belong, and where you know others will be singing your tune.

I’m energized by all that Cabrillo Stage means to the community and excited to build on that reputation to create meaningful and memorable summer traditions for years to come.

I wish you an uplifting holiday season surrounded by those you love.

Andrea L. Hart
Artistic Director

PS — I can’t wait to share our plans for the coming season and meet each of you at our events and performances. To start getting to know you, I invite you to respond to a short (and anonymous!) survey by clicking the link below. I’m interested in learning about your history with Cabrillo Stage, a favorite moment from past seasons, and what shows you’d love to see on our stage. https://www.cabrillostage.com/patronsurvey
