Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common eye condition that affects the meibomian glands, which are tiny oil-producing glands located in the eyelids. These glands secrete oils that form the outermost layer of the tear film, helping to prevent evaporation of tears and maintaining moisture on the surface of the eye. When these glands become blocked or dysfunctional it can lead to a variety of symptoms and eye problems, such as dry eyes, inflammation of the eyelid margins and eye irritation.

WHAT IS MYOPIA? Myopia is a progressive and irreversible eye condition.

A common vision symptom is nearsightedness or the inability to see distant objects clearly. The underlying cause of myopia is due to the eye growing longer than it should.

What happens during a comprehensive eye exam? 👁

Here’s what you can expect:

1. HEALTH INTAKE: Review of ocular, health and family history.

2. ENTRANCE TESTS: Initial visual acuity, color, muscle, pupil and peripheral vision testing.

3. REFRACTION: Test for prescription for glasses/contact lenses.

4. OCULAR HEALTH EXAM: Evaluation of the front and back of the eyes with the slit lamp microscope, eye pressure check, retinal imaging and dilation.

**Exams take about 30 minutes, add an additional 30 minutes if the dilated fundus exam is required.

Experiencing dry eyes during the fall + winter seasons is common! Heating systems, low humidity and dropping temps are all factors. Here are 4 ways to combat dry eyes:

1. STAY HYDRATED: Tear production is important in preventing dry eyes so staying hydrated will help in producing a healthy volume of tears. Avoiding beverages that are high in caffeine or alcohol can also help keep your body hydrated and your eyes healthy.

2. USE A HUMIDIFIER: Increasing the humidity in the air can reduce the evaporation of tears and keep the eyes moist, resulting in reduced dryness, irritation and redness.

3. LIMIT SCREEN TIME: Studies have shown that people blink significantly less when viewing a digital screen and overtime this can deprive the eyes of much-needed moisture.

4. INCREASE INTAKE OF DRY EYE VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS: Make sure to take dry eye vitamin supplements that include GLA and Omega-3s. We offer a great option in our office!
